Director of Development Description The Director of Development is responsible for all fund development for WaterPartners International. This key team member oversees core development programs and supports the Chief Operating Officer with plans to diversify and increase funding sources to sustain the organization’s expanding global mission. The Director of Development develops and executes the annual development plan for the organization while working closely with the Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director, and the Board of Directors in all fundraising initiatives for WaterPartners. Responsibilities Planning and Analysis
• In collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer, develop an annual comprehensive plan for fund development and marketing activities for the organization, including strategies, timelines, costs, and financial goals.
• Monitor achievement of fund development plan goals and adjust plans as necessary to ensure overall funding goals are met.
• Develop and manage an annual operating budget for the development team, monitoring expenses, and analyzing the benefits versus cost of each component of the annual fund development plan.
• In collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer, review fund development program objectives quarterly, evaluating effectiveness of fund development program, and seek feedback from board, staff, and funding community on an ongoing basis.
Donor Development and Relations
• Refine, implement, and manage a comprehensive strategy for soliciting funds from individuals, small businesses, small foundations, churches, clubs and organizations, civic groups, and workplace giving programs to promote WaterPartners and attract new donors.
• Refine and manage initiatives to cultivate and sustain relationships with major donors, involving board members and other strategic partners to identify and nurture opportunities for engaging key supporters in WPI’s mission.
• Refine direct mail and electronic campaigns to solicit new and repeat donor support. Track campaign results and monitor trends in giving to maximize effectiveness of future campaigns.
• Refine and monitor donor acknowledgement and appreciation processes to ensure that all donors receive prompt and gracious thanks for their gifts to WaterPartners. Call upon the executive directors or board members as appropriate to convey thanks to major donors and other special contributors.
• Oversee donor database management systems to ensure all contributions are recorded and that donation and donor data is accessible for analysis and reporting efficiently.
• Ensure that donors receive accurate receipts as appropriate for tax purposes.
Special Events
• Evaluate fundraising event activities for costs/benefits and opportunities for growth.
• Develop strategies and implement plans to produce annual special events including projections for revenues, expenses, attendance, and best markets for hosting the events.
Supervision and Reporting
• Provide leadership, supervision, and direction to fund development staff, determining annual goals and objectives for development team members, and evaluating performance according to WaterPartners’ policies and procedures.
• Provide informal feedback and direction to fund development staff on a routine basis to affirm performance and to solve problems as needs or issues arise.
• Conduct team meetings with development staff and participate in full WPI staff meetings and retreats.
• Maintain effective working relationships with Board members by attending meetings as requested by the Chief Operating Officer, participating in Resource Development and Strategic Planning discussions, and providing professional assistance as needed.
• Participate in monitoring and evaluation of strategic planning goals and objectives. Qualifications Education
Minimum required with preferred elements included: Bachelor's degree in Business, Administration or related field.
Preferred Experience
• 5+ years successful record directing fund development, national sales, or business development efforts.
• 5+ years managing development staff for non-profit organizations, including experience writing grants, overseeing or producing special events, developing and implementing direct mail and on-line campaigns, nurturing and managing donor relationships, and working with a board of directors.
• Excellent verbal and written communications, management, leadership, teamwork, networking, budgeting, and problem solving skills are required.
