I have a few things I need to say and get off my chest.
1) Tony:
We just had a crappy conversation, and I don't like that. You're a good friend. You disagree with me on something I feel very fundamentally strongly about. I don't want something like this to make living with you hard to do, and I don't want to feel like every time I make my opinion known, just because I disagree with you you're going to go around and try to convince me that I'm wrong. That just makes me even angrier and less wanting to drop it. I care about you and your opinion, but I will not change my standpoint on something I feel so strongly about in order to make things easier. If we can agree to disagree, and leave racial slurs and epithets and racial things completely out of the mix, we'll be fine. I hope you agree with me on that point.
2) Audrey:
I don't want you to feel like if I disagree with someone, and you may not disagree completely or agree completely, that you have to completely back me up, because that isn't fair to you. Please, let yourself be known.
3) Aaron:
I don't know if you'll read this, but if you still have verizon phone service, give me a call, so we can talk. I was very upset yesterday, and I still am, but it's hard to communicate fully via the internet. I shouldn't have cut off ties with you via LJ, but I was shocked, angry, and extraordinarily upset. I will say I acted in anger, and I should have given myself some time to digest what I was feeling before responding.
4) To everybody:
I have a strong opinion. I feel like racism is horrible, and I feel like saying something like there shouldn't be "Black History Month" or anything else is something that's wrong to say. As Americans, it is our duty to learn about history. Because it's labeled 'Black history Month' for example doesn't mean that white people don't receive the same amount of attention, they just don't get the label. I'd say that in general, racism is stupid. black history month, any holiday devoted to some racial or ethnic minority is not a tool to degrade anybody else, but just an opportunity to learn and celebrate about another culture that is a main part of our American history. If there shouldn't be Black History Month, then there shouldn't be Christmas, or Mole Day for chemists, or International Talk Like a Pirate Day, or Hannukah, or any day to celebrate or learn about anything. Yes, all those things I mentioned were days as compared to months, but really, it's all voluntary. If we're going to go from the standpoint that we're americans and that's all that should be important, then the only holiday that should be celebrated is Independence day.
And even then, not everyone in this country was independent.
This is my opinion. I won't change it. If you disagree with me, that's fine. If you agree with me, that's fine too.
