There are people now: people that travel along the roads alone or in caravans; people that talk among themselves and stare warily at Lelouch when he passes, avoiding eye contact; people that inhabit the once-empty cities and work the once-deserted fields; people. It's so utterly alien to his understanding of this world that Lelouch almost jumped out of his skin the first time he saw an unfamiliar face coming up the road behind him.
He wonders what it means. What all of this means. If it weren't for the fact that he's so concerned about Yoite, he'd head right into Hisato and start talking up the locals; as it is, he's skirting the city limits, cutting around to find the younger boy.
- There he is.
"Yoite!" Lelouch shouts, making his way over to him more quickly.
Yoite straightens when his name is called, blue eyes flicking upwards underneath the brim of his hat, and little head tilting back to scan just above the grass. Sure enough there he is, the owner of the voice, fast approaching him.
Shifting the pink kitten that is Raikou from his lap to his shoulder, he gathers himself up off the ground.
"Lelouch-san," a wavering smile as he takes a few timid steps to greet him, "..you are really here." He reaches out and briefly tugs on the man's sleeve to verify this. Yet when the tugging stops, Yoite's hand remains clutching the fabric.
Yoite really has shrunk - Lelouch has to bend down slightly just for Yoite to pull on his sleeve. "Y-Yeah, I'm really here," he says, stumbling a little for breath. Running isn't one of Lelouch's many talents.
There is a pink kitten on Yoite's shoulder at the moment, but Lelouch ignores it. "I'm here, Yoite." He's so small. Why is he so small? He shouldn't be this small. Lelouch remembers carrying Nunnally through a war zone when she wasn't much smaller than that, all awkward skinny limbs hanging over his back. There are places that children shouldn't be. This is one of them.
Yoite's gloves have large bloodstains on them, dry by now, having been left to set and darken for a day. Gau's blood. And he hasn't forgotten that it is Gau's blood, thus why they haven't been removed.
But that isn't what he's thinking about now.
As he keeps his grip on that wrist his little head slumps forward and his forehead presses against Lelouch's abdomen causing Raikou to shift just a little over his neck as not to fall. There is a tiny weak growling sound from Yoite's stomach.
But like this Yoite can't even recognize what is wrong.
"...neh..L-lelouch-san... Yoite doesn't feel good," he mumbles and another growl follows.
If Raikou could, he would sigh in frustration, because he's tried thinking of ways to tell Yoite to eat, but the boy's grief has been such that if he did understand Raikou's pathetic attempts, he paid them no heed.
Now though, he plants both front paws on the paperboy hat and just stares up at Lelouch, fully expecting this person who, apparently, is Yoite's friend, to do what he cannot at the moment and make the kid eat something.

This one wasn't an illusion.
