The curl of heat begins in his lungs. A little oven, a little flame, a thumbnail of it which swirls and eddies and which the particles of Itachi's body burn to readiness: nurture, prepare, and --

Sacrifice.

Fire. Water. Elements of destruction, natural wonders of the gods, and the sky of this world is not empty, but Sasuke is gone, and Itachi has come this day to pay in blood. So when he stands, when he stands, and pinches his fingers to his thumbs, his hands before his mouth -- stream of fire -- until the nerves are alive with the heat.

(He is holding the knife, you see. Before the path of the jutsu which is burning the tips of his fingers. Holding the knife, and once it is well-heated and his nerves are well-licked by the flames, he pulls it back -- )

One swipe, and the hair falls to the ground.

And within a few more seconds, shallow marks to the hands, to the fingertips, the knuckles, wherever he would have held that baby in another lifetime, in another world, beneath an empty sky.

Lick to the lips, press of the eyelids, and the Sharingan goes, and there are only two eyes, dark -- and two hands, with bloodied fingers groping, stroking, until his eyelids are painted with it, and the trails run down the cheeks like tears, darker than the torii, shining slick in the sunlight.

The fibers of his hair, the blood of these hands which released so much blood, the light of the Sharingan, and now, the blade itself, which Itachi lays lovingly at his feet.

A first offering.

It is not enough.

He hears the birds chirping in the nearby forests, the song through the summer air, clear and high and bright, and he knows, he knows, it is not sufficient, and will never be sufficient.

But this is only the first sacrifice.

One must begin somewhere.

Patience.

And soon.

And soon --

Itachi rinses his hands in the basin.
