Abarai wasn't kidding about the weirdo locals, Matt discovers, after he's hiked to the village that started out only dimly visible, smoking two more cigarettes on the way. Then he realized that the buildings that were slowly getting closer looked something less than modern, and reluctantly started conserving tobacco.

For a guy who's uncomfortable being noticed at the best of times, walking through the streets with these people outright staring, whispering to each other, even coming up to peer at him and tug at his striped shirt... it's like walking a gauntlet of torture. Matt's never been so grateful for the goggles. He can still feel his face go scarlet the more they eye him and poke at him and talk about him in whispers he can't catch, until he thinks he might burst into flames and die of embarrassment.

Which is kind of a blessing in disguise, really, a distraction from how he has no fucking idea what to say to Mello when he sees him. Less than twenty-four hours ago, they were both alive. Now Matt's dead; he knows he's dead, and ( ... )

Beyond hummed happily as he slipped into the village, now trailing after the man fairly blatantly with the abrupt lack of foilage. The villagers remain somewhere between nervous and fascinated by his appearance, though it's perhaps bettered since before with the slow darkening of his hair through less filthy means (at least in an obvious sense). The strands along his nape stick awkwardly and the he reaches back to scratch, yawning widely. This yawn seems to set off a jolt of chattering which hushes when he glances around ( ... )

"Yeah, I--"

Matt doesn't actually want to talk to Mello about any of the shit that went down. He knows he'll have to, but putting it off sounds like a real good idea. "--have a lot of questions," he finishes, lamely.

"Like, who's following you?"

Mello didn't tap Matt to be his surveillance guy for nothing; he saw that backwards glance. What's more, he saw the telltale gesture that says Mello's getting close to snapping, and doing something reckless just to do something. For once, Matt doesn't feel like talking him down from that.

"And where are we, really? I've heard a lot about gods, and next to nothing that's actually useful." Despite it all, Matt does still trust Mello to give him the truth. Painfully unvarnished, maybe, but true.

Beyond chuckled at the movement and only responded by twisting his right leg in such a way as to carefully look over the bottom of his foot, weight balancing on the other leg. Two digits carefully picked out the random sharps puncturing his foot, dropping them to the ground thoughtlessly. His foot returned to the ground and he repeated the action with the opposing foot, uninterested in the who's-who and what's-what shit that accompanies every new runt to Kannagara.

At the question, he lifted his hand, fingers wiggling as though "Mail" had offered a simple greeting.

"Rue, remember~?" Though Mimi may simply correct him. And if he does, that means Mail here has a reason to know the name B.
