( Red and black goes the world. )
Red and black like Sharingan, red and black like Akatsuki garments; the black in one eye, the red in the other, Itachi watches as Sasuke gives colour to half of his world -- the other half: the other half is darkness, deep and unending, a night without stars, but leave it to Sasuke to add colour.
Itachi wishes he still had two eyes. Wishes only that he might see his brother, fully, in this moment. It is not the first time he has found himself on the edge of blindness, limitless shadows, and his thought, then, had been, he would not see his brother's face. Not when his eyes finally went. Not when the blood rose and choked him. The blood has moved. It is no longer a series of red worms in his chest; it is chunks of disposable skin hanging from the bones on his arms. He is tearing from himself. Coming apart. That is nothing new. Itachi knew it would come to this. Sasuke was the angry one. Sasuke was the one who claimed vengeance.
The pieces of the corpse still look warm, red and purple and green. The other corpse. Two corpses. Two brothers.
And Itachi, still standing, drops to his knees.
Sasuke arrived. The battle is won now.
(He thought this when he first held him all those years ago, as well.)
The lights may go out again.
So much blood is flowing out.
So much poisoned, murderous, traitorous blood.
This fight had been a battle of monsters -- but not the one the boy had chased. Not even the boy himself, no. Worse creatures than those. Would Sasuke why Itachi had had to do it? To walk in darkness? To return to the darkness? No, certainly not. He would not. None of them had understood, and none of them would. But that was all right. Sasuke was the fire. Sasuke was the light. He had returned colour to the world. And he would take up the fight.
He would always take up the fight.
