Pride.

Determination.

Will.

Protector.

Honor.

All put in this blade.

After Rukia left Rin, she glanced upward to gaze at the sky. It looked like hell. The world was troubled and she knew this. And the reiatsu of the hollows was not helping. Not just low levels hollows, but Menos. That meant Gillians, Adjuchas, and Vasto Lorde. Rukia never had a great issue with dealing with them, but she knew she would have some trouble. Because of Rin, she was able to get some rest. But going without sleep for four days only to rest for a couple of hours didn’t make a sound recovery.

The shinigami pressed forward, not having to go far to find the masses in front of her. She had to protect Rin. Not because she was an ally or even a friend, but because it was her job. She had to protect Raisato. She would have to do what she could before asking for help.

No.

Her pride wouldn’t let her. She had chose to disconnect herself from Byakuya and Renji. Perhaps if things got too bad, she would contact Ukitake, but Rukia would see how far things would go until then.

Such confliction.

She hated it.

She drew her zanpakutou; her determination in herself and her blade. She could do this. The masses of smaller hollows charged towards her. Between her swordsmanship and her kido skills, taking out the enemy at this point was no problem. She knew not to push herself from the beginning. Thankfully, the group wasn’t as large as the one in Hisato.

Fighting. Fighting. Fighting.

She won’t stop. She can’t stop.

Hadou number 33; Soukatsui

It doesn’t matter if her vision is slightly blurring. Now she would have to rely on other senses to know where they are and when to strike. The main hollows were gone and now behind them were the Gillians. They were always a pain in an ass to deal with, especially with their Ceros. Rukia would have to strike before they would. A Cero in her state could end her life. She was aware of this.

Mae, Sode no Shirayuki

The familiar resonance of her zanpaktou as the sword turned white. A ribbon flowed from the hilt.

Some no mai, Tsukishiro

A circular pattern of light surrounded the hollows in place, freezing them in a pillar of ice and then shattering. This was going to be tough. That took out a great deal of them but they still kept coming. She sent off the attack again and took out the rest. Good because that cero blast one got off before it froze almost hit her. She took a moment to retreat, taking position in one of the abandoned homes. She knew her aim was starting to be off, not to mention her vision was getting worse. Little injuries were sustained from fighting, but it still took a lot out of her.

This was going to be a problem.

She pulled out the strange contraption she had since she arrived. Violet eyes looked at it with curiosity. Why did she suddenly feel like she didn’t know how to use the device? She wanted to get in touch with her captain, to ask for help because she knew the battle was far from over.

What was the name of this device again?

Finding it useless, she placed it back into her kosode, frustrated. She didn’t have time for this. But being inside the house, it was… unsettling. Something else was here. She didn’t like this feeling… not at all.

She turned around to see…

Renji?

He called out to her and she was almost glad to see him. The male approached the girl and asked if she was okay. She nodded, closing her eyes for a moment., sitting in the floor.

“I just need to rest is all.”

And she sighed. Renji made some off handed comment about how she should have rested before going out. There was no way. A shinigami had no time to rest if hollows were attacking. Renji assured her and he would hold down the fort so she could regain her strength. She thanked him and allowed herself-

No.

Opening her eyes, she barely rolled out of the way of the fangs of Zabimaru. A second later and her blood would have been all over the wall. Standing up, she almost questioned the male in front of her, but in her delayed reaction, she came to notice that this reiatsu didn’t belong to Renji, but to someone… no, something else.

Cruel, that’s what this was. Even though it wasn’t Renji, it was still his face. She never wanted to go through that type of pain again.

The house was definitely too small for them to be fighting in. With a flash step to make her appear outside, she knew that ‘thing’ would follow. White blade pointed at the illusion of her best friend. Metal clanking against metal. She had never fought Renji before and was getting a taste of it now. They always fought together, always… always.

Block, parry, attack, attack, block, parry, parry, parry, parry. She didn’t have the strength for this. The hits were heavy and she felt herself being pushed back. Whatever she was fighting, Rukia knew she needed to finish this fight and finish it now. The strength in her arms was deteriorating. There was no way she could hold up any longer. She charged forward. Aiming for the head would be the best place. It wasn’t a hollow but the head was a vital point on the body.

Three.

Two.

One.

Path crossed and no one moved.

What…?

Rukia realized the scene in front of her. Sode no Shirayuki…

Completely missed its target, barely grazing the neck of Renji.

Damn it. Was it really going to come to this?

The large blade fangs of Zabimaru ripped through the side of her abdomen. Harshly, the blade was pulled and Rukia could feel herself wanting to fall backwards.

No. She couldn’t fall here.

Standing her ground, she tried to get her violet eyes to focus.

No, it was no use. Whatever she was fighting with Renji’s face came closer. Rukia tried her best to raise her blade, but she couldn’t. Trying to keep focus, she fell to one knee, her blood spilling over and soaking into her outfit. The tip of her blade dug itself into the ground, trying to keep her leveled, trying to keep her from falling over.

This was bad.

Renji lifted up Rukia’s head and smirked down at her. Her hair covered her faced as she had a smile of her own. He questioned why she was smiling at. She only replied with a simple phrase.

San no mai, Shirafune

The ice covered the ground and soon froz Renji’s feet to the ground.

“I will sacrifice this body if it means defeating you.”

She could feel her legs become numb from the ice. The trees, the ground, the Gillians off in the distance were becoming frozen. The illusion was dispelled and the Rakshasa became frozen and shattered. Anything else on the field within a large radius was now frozen and dead.

Rukia fell over to the side and looked into the distance. She could see Rin’s home from here. It was safe. Raisato was safe (for now).

“I’m sorry. It seems I was foolish in telling you I would be returning. I hope… you can… forgive me… Rin.”

Her breathing labored until she sadly accepted this death and her breathing calmed down. The pool of blood spread on the ice, staining it.

“Uki…take-tai… chou… R-Renji… N… nii-s… sama. I am…”

The shinigami was never able to complete her final words. Tears flowed from her eyes as the violet vibrant color turned dim and solid.
