Sasuke appears to be distraught.

"At this exact moment, no," is Pain's reply. "Come inside."

No, that is not sufficient. This boy needs something from him. He needs something from the world. Nagato remembers what it was like at that age -- remembers the sense of losing his own brother (though they were not tied by blood, no, but it was no different), remembers standing in doorways looking not so different from how Sasuke looks now: wet, confused, exhausted. But in Nagato's case, he was begging for food. And later: soliciting allies.

"I remember well." He hesitates. Steps aside for Sasuke. He may be saying too much. This boy has asked for no speeches, no commiserating. And Pain has already spoken to him of these matters. It is only that -- "Yes, I recall the day I looked at the smiling faces in the pictures and the comprehension dawned upon me that I was not one of them. I had a best friend once . . . and he often smiled, and lived very thoroughly . . . and yet he died while I continue to live on. I wished for years to be this person. Or one of those people. The ones who live in comfort, contented by the offerings of the universe -- "

Ah, he is saying too much.

"Content for peace. Even false peace. False morals. Lies and betrayal. You are my ally. I will help you."

He says the last more forcefully: will, yes, because this is important. Pain must impress upon him that he is different from the others. Different from Konoha. Different from every smiling face Sasuke sees while he endures his own isolation.

"Konan and I were simply having sexual intercourse just this moment ago."

You should join us, he thinks.

(Though it makes no sense. Sasuke. Why should Sasuke join them? Sasuke is merely his ally.

No. Cannot sake that. That would be absurd. He must say something less indelicate. Something like --

"Endorphin release, insofar as I understand it, is beneficial for relieving the aggression and stress which you exhibit. I know this firsthand. And . . . if you are a virgin, you may wish to look into an attempt to rectify your condition. Virginity will not improve your mood."
