Sasuke.

Pain had not expected to see him here. Here, in the home he has made with Konan -- not the one they had before, nor their home in their world, nor anything which feels like it has been meant for their two bodies to inhabit, but there is a roof and there are beds.

It is raining outside, if lightly; droplets run all down the length of Sasuke's skin, and Pain notices more than he feels he should. Beds. Yes, certainly. A warm one in which he has been relaxing with Konan while the sky has flowed by in sunbursts and splotches of hazy grey clouds. When the sunlight turns from milk white as in bare skies to a trickle of rust and honey, that it is when the world is ripe for love-making.

And they have been making love. Himself. Konan: with the renewed spirit of people who have found one another again, past hell and hardships, and his body is still warm from her body, but Sasuke --

Sasuke, Pain cannot help realizing with a pang, is alone still.

Pain has found Konan, but Sasuke is alone.

And that is not fair. That is not right. Pain is suddenly sorry for him. Terribly sorry. Itachi would have given the world for his younger brother -- would have and did sell his soul for him. How is it that Itachi is dead again? In this deathless world, where is there room for a man such as Itachi, who has only ever known how he must die?

"Sasuke."

Gently enough.

With a kind of care, because he must be unsteady now. Sasuke must be.

"What brings you here?"

Perhaps Sasuke wishes to plan. Or perhaps it is the force of his isolation, his loneliness, that calls out, that demands attention.

Pain thinks: Yes, Sasuke does need attention. He needs someone who understands him. Someone like himself. Although he is not certain why this last part insists upon sticking in his mind.
