[It’s nearly enough to disrupt Naruto’s carefully crafted and too easily shattered control. But while the sight of Uchiha Itachi doesn’t do that, there is no denying it almost-does-it. And when he speaks-

Considering Itachi is in the same building - no, the same village- as he is.

And looking at Sasuke.

[Sasuke doesn't bother to move from where he's leaning against the wall. That kunai isn't going to do anything against Itachi. And even if it was something more, there's no way the moron can beat his brother. No matter how strong he's gotten.

But hearing Naruto say those words - he can't ignore it. Because those words, that tone, that fevered rage are so familiar to him. And he hates them. Hates them. Because the whole time he had thought the fire inside him was lighting the way, but really it was blinding him. And in the end he saw nothing at all of the truth.

After everything that was sacrificed, how can you speak to him that way? How can you speak to him as if you know anything about what was lost? Acting like you have any reason to hate him when he never took anything from you, it was me he took from, and even then it wasn't him at all, it was you who took it.Naruto ( ... )

That angry indifference.

The hate he knows--needs--and anger he is used to--fed it, made it grow--but this refusal to acknowledge, this disregard as if he's nothing...

Itachi doesn't know how to accept it.

Even though he knows he deserves it.

So he forces his eyes to turn away and focus on ones that are filled with enough hate and anger and resent that Itachi thinks it could be enough for both of them.

And he feeds on it--even though it's not from the one the one that makes it worth it.]

[He doesn’t put the kunai down. Of course he doesn’t. Uchiha Itachi is standing just feet from them both so the only way to make Naruto give up his weapon now would be to pry it from his cold dead fingers.

He does stare at Sasuke though, for just a moment. He stares at him as though he has finally lost his mind - or maybe he lost it when he killed his brother, after all when you live for revenge, when that’s all you’ve got and all you’ve had for years, what do you do when it’s gone? Take up gardening? Maybe Sasuke lost his mind when he joined Akatsuki. Maybe it was gone before then, maybe Orochimaru did manage to snag a bit of Sasuke for himself after all.

Naruto doesn’t know. But for a few seconds he thinks Sasuke is completely nutsHe’s missing something. He is definitely missing some ( ... )

No. There is nothing wrong with Sasuke.

Nothing more than what Itachi himself has done.

Naruto demands more than he questions and Itachi does not rise to his bait. Naruto is not his concern now. Even if he is right.

He doesn't respond to him but instead makes his way to the doorway that the two are guarding. The look in his eyes asks: Will you stop me?

Because now is not the time for petty disputes.]
