[Matt has to think about that for a moment, and fires up a cigarette to fill the dead air time.]

A while. Not ever since the locals appeared, but starting not too long after. Maybe three, four weeks by now? [Which seems longer than that, thanks to the time distortion.

He edges the lamb away from Elfangor, who's doing better, but Matt still isn't going to take a chance on having meat too close to him. The potatoes and salad are probably okay, and the wine sure can't hurt.

After initial misgivings about being around people all day, Matt found he didn't mind it too much. Years of practice at fading into the background actually served him well.

He likes Gokudera, and is still worried about Claire, of whom he hasn't been able to find any sign around the market, where Peter thought they might be holding her. He plans to take another look tomorrow, and has a vague idea of trying to morph someone with one of those damn forehead marks.]

But as strained as things were then, when it began, it is much different now. Before, they seemed content to complain about us in their papers. But now, there have been so many open attacks--it is difficult to predict just how far they are prepared to go.

[Elfangor cannot help but think of his own attack. If there are others in this world like that man, sick and depraved enough to inflict torture like that...

He skewers a tomato, actually taking a bite without having to be prodded to eat. It is getting easier, with time, to not feel the immediate nausea, or at least to suppress it enough to eat as necessary. (To keep his strength up, should he need it, especially in such dangerous times as this.) At least with food that is not meat. He watches Matt nudge it away with a sense of acute relief.]

[Despite their words, Fai's attention is drawn more to the plates and the odd behavior the two have with the food. Same as that first day, really.

He's definitely missing something here... he just isn't sure what.

So he does the logical thing and frown, with that just right hint of friendly concern as he speaks softly.]

Not to change the subject, but... have I offended you with what I made? I can cook something else for you if you don't like lamb...

Because honestly, with all of the strife raging around here, I'd rather make something you'll actually eat then waste it. You'll need the energy, most likely.

[Matt chews on his lower lip for a second, not wanting to speak for both of them, but he's still deeply worried about Elfangor, and has wanted to ask for help.]

No, it's fine, man. Really tasty, actually. Just.

[And he looks at Elfangor again. Your turn, if you want to talk about it. For himself, Matt's all over the lamb, which is really good, though he turns a little away from his boyfriend to eat it.]

Anyway, the thing with the locals. We're, like, a convenient scapegoat. They're kinda medieval, and since they don't understand us, we're scary.

[It makes sense, intellectually, but Matt's still doing a slow burn over the way they put this attitude into practice.]

Oh, no, I am sure it's quite good, it is just...

[Elfangor swallows the bile in his throat at the memory, forces it down, can't think about it, not now. Not ever. He angles away as well, but he can still hear the sound of teeth rending meat, and he shudders. But does not throw up. That, at least, is some progress.]

A bit difficult to stomach meat of any sort when you yourself have been eaten.

[He takes a sip of the wine, more to remove the taste of bile than anything, but also to refocus, to center himself.]
