Matt's expecting Ax to show up. He likes the kid already, but he doesn't like tiptoeing around the whole 'I know your brother who's supposed to be dead' thing. Awkward.

He's not expecting him to come crashing through the door. It's only most of a lifetime's conditioning at not dropping his tobacco when surprised that lets him hang onto his pipe.

He just gets the hell out of the way, backing up against the closest wall that isn't suddenly open to the outside, because he suspects he doesn't even exist in Ax's world right now, and he does not wanna get up close and personal with that tail.

Although he typically finds it more comfortable to be indoors as human, Elfangor is still in his Andalite form from when he had demorphed to show himself to Aximili over the Hitomi.

And if it is a bit cramped with one Andalite indoors, two can be quite hazardous. (He is keeping a stalk eye on Matt to make sure he does not get trampled.)

Even so, he is caught between a myriad of emotions. But the ones closest to the surface are joy at seeing his younger brother, and a familiar fond frustration at him kicking down the goddamn door.

But now is not the time to reprimand him for his exuberance. He just laughs, in that silent way that Andalites do, and brings forth his tail in a gesture of greeting.

< Oh Aximili, it is so good to see you. >

Though he will certainly be smacking you for destroying the door, later.

It turns out to be a lot smaller in here than it should be for two Andalites to have room to move comfortably, especially with one flailing around as he is. Ax's hooves began sliding on the smoother wooden floors almost as soon as he got into the house, so he had to scrabble for purchase fairly quickly. Thankfully the wood is hard enough that a stray hoofstep has not punched a hole in it (so far), but a careless whip of the tail to his left nicked a fair chunk out of a support beam (not badly enough to destabilize the building structure, though). He spots a young human male (older than the Animorphs, though) in the corner and has the presence of mind to keep a stalk eye on him to make sure he doesn't trample him.

The rest of Ax's attention, though, is reserved for his older brother.

< Elfangor... > In the heat of the moment, Ax forgets his title. He raises his tail to Elfangor's to greet him. < I never thought - they said you were killed... > Ax blinks up at his older brother. < I vowed... against Visser Three... >

Matt would edge toward his room to leave them alone for their reunion if he could, but it's more than a bit crowded in here. He gives a little wave, feeling really superfluous, and knowing his cheeks have gone pink because of that. "Hey, Ax."

Ax is kind of an accident waiting to happen, huh? That makes Matt like him more, not less, with a sort of fellow-feeling of awkwardness. Part of him is still detached enough to be fascinated and take mental notes on the way the brothers greet each other, to realize Ax knows at least the basics of what happened to Elfangor. Between knowing him and knowing Marco, Matt kinda wants to kick that Visser Three guy's ass himself.

Oh. Oh, of course Aximili would have taken up the avenging oath... Even against someone so dangerous as Esplin. His hearts clench for his brother. To have taken on such an impossible vow--it must have been terrible.

And as much as he wants to tell Aximili that everything is alright, it doesn't change the fact that he will die back home, that he cannot undo this or prevent it from happening.

< Aximili. > It is difficult, but he must tell him. < We are all brought here from different moments in time, different universes as well. But in my case... I was brought here moments before my death. > He watches his brother, a sadness in his eyes--not so much for himself, but for being unable to take this awful burden off of his shoulders.

< Do you understand? I will still die, little brother. There is nothing I can do about that, as much as I wish I could ( ... )
