[Christmas is a strange time for Gokudera. It’s a combination of nostalgia, rotten and bittersweet memories, and hollow dreams of plastic happiness. It’s the scent of candle smoke and worn wood of the church benches, endless chanting of choir boys and a distant sound of Ave Maria sung by his mother. It’s the endless waiting that ends in tearing precious sheet music out of ridiculously colorful paper, pressing jam-sticky fingers to Bianchi’s white skirt hem and laughing escape when she notices him, scent of alcohol in certain doctor’s breath while slipping him a slim book full of interesting things his father doesn’t approve of. It’s the endless rally of Christmas songs he plays until his fingers are numb and they keep asking for more, Bianchi’s immature voice not complimenting the piano during Astro del Ciel, his father's stormy frown when he refuses to play more. It's a giggle of faceless women, an endless list of excuses, a grave without a name, a pair of awkward shoes and a strangling tie. It's sleeping on a sofa in a small alcove in the great hall, sweet wine and scent of cigars. It’s the wooden benches and pitying face of a clergy man, the roar of pride and endless stubbornness. It’s loneliness and single candle on his windowsill, a hummed sancta maria, ora pro nobis under his breath and a silent prayer he never means to say. It’s a glitter Santa Claus on a shop window and a sea of neon lights, a hand holding a singing card and a plastic torch outside the local market, spewing out Jingle Bells around the clock. It’s a present he never expected to have and a forced smile that still held all that he needed in life.

It’s all that and more.

Gokudera spends most of Christmas either lightly tipsy or drunk off his ass. He is neither good company, nor easy to deal with. This is why he did not even consider the party, even if he knew that Tsuna might be going. Yamamoto will be there, and that’s enough for him.

This is also why he is stumbling on his way to track Yamamoto, tripping over several items on his way. The man sounds positively furious. Or perhaps that is scared. It could be both. That is what makes Gokudera run despite his current condition, which is less than admirable in fact.

He is panting slightly as he dives into the hall and from there to the vestibule, leaning against the frame of the door and staring Yamamoto through his cherry red reading glasses, yukata open from the front and revealing the fact that he’s wearing nothing but a pair of tattered jeans, the very same pair he arrived to Kannagara with.

A frown and he straightens up.]

...What’s the matter? Did something happen to the Tenth?
