I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. ~Henry David Thoreau, 1854 )
This boy - this lonely, solitary boy - that was even now crying silent tears over a confusion and heartbreak he probably didn’t even fully understand, still turned his face to the light when surrounded by shadow and darkness.
He was still looking to be found, by himself and others, whether he realized it or not.
Jealousy burned away under the moon’s gentle glow - because he knew (you’ve always know, haven’t you) that his part of Gau’s heart was still his own and it was beyond selfish to resent this pitiful child the chance to feel that same strength of love, to let the bond with another help strengthen his heart and his resolve.
And as the jealousy faded away, curiosity set in.
Because he’d seen the disappointment in Yoite’s eyes when he’d realized he wasn’t the same Raikou that had built a bond with him. He needed to know just how this other ‘self’ had managed to earn even a measure of this child’s trust…because in that moment, Raikou realized sitting there, guarding silently over him wasn’t enough.
He needed to start living up to the honor his clan once claimed. He needed to restore it within himself, in the right way this time…and he needed to start with this beautiful, broken, little boy.
A boy that has not moved at all in nearly an hour.
Raikou pushed up to crouching, ready to leap down in the early morning light to go put the teen into bed, when Yoite finally stirred and did the deed himself. Instead, he waited with an infinite patience before slipping away and getting breakfast for them both. Simple onigri, yes, but plenty of it to sate Yoite’s insane hunger, then went back to the boy’s temple.
He slipped inside long enough to draw the blanket a little higher up the slender shoulder, then lifted the teen’s Hitomi and took it outside with him. Long legs stretched out before him as Raikou settled in to wait for the other to wake up, his gamon resting on the cool stone beside him as Raikou leaned back against the temple and began to scroll through the Hitomi, looking for any of the messages between his ‘other’ self and Yoite.
