[dream, week 26, day 3, middle of the night]

Fifteen minutes ago, it was a nice building. In another fifteen minutes, it will be a pile of rubble. You are caught in the middle of it, with bits of debris raining down on you, bouncing painfully off your back and shoulders. You are running, while the walls crack and crumble around you and the dust coats the inside of your mouth. You leap over piles of what used to be the ceiling, searching.

Something terrible is outside. It knows you're there.

But you can't leave. Carly is in this building somewhere - brave, loyal, reckless, stupid Carly, with her bright eyes and gentle hands. It's your fault she's here. You were supposed to protect her, but you left her behind, and now she's here, in danger that you could have saved her from. The guilt is stronger than your fear of death. You have to find her. You have to make everything right, before time runs out.

Something bright catches your eye. You pause, pushing rubble away with your hands. There is a pair of glasses lying on the floor, cracked but identifiable: hers. You pick them up, knowing that you're already too late, and you won't find her because she's already dead.

Then the building begins caving in....

[Somewhere in the night, Jack wakes up with a start. He does not go back to sleep for a long time.]
