[A stomach-turning lurch, like the world has been briefly knocked off its axis, and Kurogane falls to the ground in a tangle of steel and bloodied limbs. He springs to his feet immediately, sword held at the ready in one hand. Crimson eyes gauge his surroundings, narrowing in suspicion

[Waving to the array of cakes and sweets spread out on the picnic blanket before he and Fai, Yuui lifts his teacup and grins. Because while he could plan a menu for their cafe without a problem... it is so much more fun to get his twin's opinion on all of it.
More than anything, he wanted this to be something that was theirs, something they created together, like a jab of defiance to the title they carry.]
Which ones should we put on our me--
[Cerulean eyes widen as Yuui draws a sharp breath, the teacup falling from suddenly nerveless fingers at the brush of an oh-so-familiar life-force moments before that voice drifted up in echo from their Hitomis.]
Kuro-sama...
[But it was that sight of all that blood that had him lurching up to his knees and cutting his eyes over to his twin, something almost like panic or worry tinging their depths.]
Fai!

And it was fun, building something together, something that was theirs, and wholly good for it. To create, rather than destroy.
He held up the half-eaten pink monstrosity.]
Let's have all the-
[Something was wrong.]
Yuui?
[Fai ignored the spreading tea-stain on the picnic blanket, already half startled out of his relaxed seat by his twin's expression. Kuro-sama? Kurogane! The man in Yuui's stories!]
H-he's here? [It only took a moment's glance to see why that was a bad thing. He held out a hand to his twin, determined and calm.]
We need to go to him.
[Fai knew what to do.]

Great. My only companion before I die is a talking box.
[The fact that it was Fai's voice coming from the talking box only served to strengthen the ninja's belief that he was in the throes of delirium. He held the thing at arm's length, peering at the screen.]
Heh. Hey, pictures.
[It reminded him of the moving screens in Piffle. Grimacing, he peered down at the images the Hitomi was showing him and raised an eyebrow.]
…Fai?

Just a moment, before they're there, standing not but a few feet away from his companion.
And before thought could really catch action... Yuui let's go Fai's hand just long enough to drop down to his knees beside Kurogane, both hands shooting out to press against the bleeding wound, horror and a very real fear sliding down his spine as he realizes just how deep the wound is.]
Kuro-sama! Hey! Look at me, okay?
[A quick command before he's glancing up to his twin.]
Fai? Do you think you can heal him, even a little?
Reply
The rest of him drops to his knees beside his brother, frowns for a moment in concentration, then holds up a hand...
Magic.
He couldn't remember ever deliberately doing magic. In a palace full of mages, he could never have gotten away with such a thing, but he must have done it once or twice. He did it the other day, in the garden, and why did this feel so different? This time, it was important.]
Please.
[He doesn't know who he's begging, the gods, fate, his luck, himself. But it's enough, and the magic sparks between his fingers, brightly glowing glyphs as blue and clear as flowing water, binding themselves around Kurogane's wound like a bandage made from moonlight ( ... )

Took you long enough.
[He watched, warily, as Fai dropped to his knees beside him. There was something...off about the blond mage's appearance, and he stared at his erstwhile traveling companion until the solution presented itself to his increasingly shaky consciousness.]
You've got both eyes.
[He reached out with the arm that wasn't cut to the bone, touching a callused palm to the side of Fai's face usually concealed by a length of black cloth. He curled his fingers, careful not to poke anything sensitive, making a protective shield over Fai's left eye]
Tha'ss good. Y'look better symmetrical.
[The blond midget was doing something magicky. Kurogane watched with interest as a stream of glowing blue runes poured from the small boy's hands and wrapped around his wound. Torn flesh stirred, drawing together in an accelerated healing process that would made him nauseous if blood loss hadn't already turned ( ... )

His hands jerked as he was brought up short, and the magic's trailing edge finished the circuit and dissipated. Fai put them on the ground and hung his head, partly to hide his face and partly to wait out the dizziness that came with overexertion.]
Yuui... Did it work?

One arm wound around the boy's chest to support him, the other smoothed slow circles over the still too small back as he leaned in to brush a kiss across the crown of Fai's head.]
It did. Enough that it's not life threatening anymore. You were amazing, Fai. Absolutely amazing, my heart. Now...
[Reaching out with the hand that had been on Fai's back, Yuui probed carefully at the wound, a slight frown on his face as he curls his fist in the front of the ninja's coat.]
Come here, Fai, and hold on tight so I can take us home.
[Focus on the emergency first, then go back and make sure Fai know Kurogane wasn't like them. After all, they've been on worlds where there were twins and not once has the man shown any derision towards them...]

[Consciousness was brief, but Kurogane managed to stay awake long enough to wrap his hand around Fai's wrist. There was a point he had to make, he remembered vaguely, but his mouth was refusing to form coherent words.]
Won't…won't leave you behind. Ever.

What could he say?
He held on tightly; glad that even if Kurogane was like them, then he still cared for Yuui enough to make a promise like that. To persevere, where Fai had failed. He gave Yuui a nod.]
I'm ready.

[That declaration was more disconcerting than Yuui cared to admit, because it was an immediate reminder of what he'd feared as truth when they moved to escape Rekord Country. Moreso was that odd... intensity in those crimson orbs.
Therefore it was obviously something to push aside and thoroughly ignore, because honestly! He had much more important things to take care of. Namely Fai and Kurogane.
(Better this way, really.)
So he pulled his twin closer and lifted the hand not currently caught against the ninja, pulled his magic around them once again before bringing them all home, appearing on the floor of his and Fai's bedroom.]
Alright. Okay...Fai. Do you have enough energy to grab me a basin of water and one of the clean sheets from the chest? I need to make bandages. Just that, then I promise you can rest.

There was blood on his clothes, Kurogane's blood, soaked into his sleeves and the knees of his pants.
He offered these with a small, tired smile. How had he gotten so soft that this wore him out? He used to be able to hang by his arms for hours or days on end. Now a basin of cool water felt heavy.]
Here.

[With a quick shift in his seat, Yuui relieved his brother of his burden and gave him a rather shrewd look. He had no doubt that Fai had managed to do had drained his still too frail body almost to the threshhold. So with a frown, he set the supplies off to the side and reached for his brother, pulled him into a hug.
Because now that Kurogane wasn't bleeding, he could most definitely spare the moment to reassure.]
You did so well, my heart. I knew you could. But you're going to need to rest now, so let's get you changed and into bed. A nap will do you good.
Reply
[The protest is weak- Fai knows he did his best, and it's difficult to be humble when Yuui is acting so...so proud! Fai looks up at his brother through his hair, and on impulse presses into the hug like he did not so terribly long ago, in fear.
Never let go again!]
Do I have to? I want to stay with you.
Reply
[Despite the words, however, Yuui tightened his arm around his twin and tapped his chin up to better see those eyes as he nodded to their bed.]
After that, you can rest down at this end of the bed while I get him settled. He was hurt pretty bad and doesn’t know what dimension he’s in, and he’ll be a little confused since he only knows me as ‘Fai’ and not ‘Yuui’ so I was thinking… put him on a futon in here, so I can watch over you both. Is that okay?

Hmm.
[Why was Fai calling the little guy 'Fai'? And who was 'Yuui'?]
The hell's going on?
