[week 18, day 2] arrival -- video

[She should be more concerned about the fact she went from being in New York to being here, but Claire can't really be bothered but to do anything but stare at the beautiful scene surrounding her. She's holding a phone in one hand and knows that she's recording, but doesn't really make any hurry to do anything interesting. She's standing in the ( Read more... )

[ Isaac knows who she is even before she introduces herself. Claire Bennet, Noah Bennet's daughter, the indestructible cheerleader. After dozens of paintings and comic panels, he could pick that face out in his sleep.

But he's never actually met her. There have been times when he's wondered why. After all, weren't his paintings part of the reason she was saved all that time ago in Odessa? Each time the curiosity emerged, Isaac has always returned to the theory that Noah just never wanted his daughter acquainted with a strung-out drug addict. Completely understandable, in retrospect.

He finds himself intrigued. It's just kind of a shock to see her here, especially when he knows what a protective father Noah is. Putting another man's mental and physical health on the line just to gather more information about a serial killer plotting to murder her was definitely father love.

A very morally questionable type of fatherly love, but fatherly love all the same.

He's aware that Claire won't know him, but his usual cryptic response is necessary here, along with a wry smile. ]

The cheerleader. You gave me a lot of trouble.

[She looks all kinds of uncomfortable with his being able to identify her, mostly because she has no clue who he is. She shifts a little, and bites at her lip, unsure if she should demand who he is or just cut off the line of communication.

It's tempting to do the second option, but instead she just arches her eyebrows and puts on a smirk that looks far braver than she's actually feeling.]

I hear that a lot.

[She does note that he doesn't entirely look like the usual creeper that stalks her or tries to kill her, and the fact that his smile isn't sinister is helping things here. But still, he knows who she is, and that she's a cheerleader. And the fact that she's somehow given him trouble is bothersome.]

It might be a good idea to tell me who you are, though. You know, before I have to scream for the nearest adult.

[She pauses]

Which would be you, since I'm talking to you, but...well, you know what I mean.

[ He hadn't even realized until that point how creepy he might be coming across. Handling social situations hasn't ever been his forte, but this is particular situation is one he's unprepared for. How do you explain to someone that you've helped to save their life when they've never even met you before?

You don't. Not when you're Isaac. ]

Sorry. My name is Isaac Mendez. I...I know your father. And Peter Petrelli.

[ He pauses, looking a little uncertain. He's been able to gather just how close Peter and Claire are, and he can't risk Claire revealing too much too quickly. It's bizarre, how he's almost protecting Peter from his own memories, but it seems necessary.]

Peter is here as well.

[The name doesn't mean anything to her, and so she continues staring. If he knows her father, that means he probably works with him, and she's sick of those people.]

If you're with The Company, just stay away from me. They've done enough to ruin my life, and I don't care if my father's involved, I'm not their pawn they can just pass around!

[Then it dawns on her that he said another name, and she gasps, and looks all kinds of shocked.]

Peter's here? I have to find him, he's probably looking for me!

[If he knows Peter, then maybe he isn't with The Company at all.

...maybe.]

[ He blinks, taken aback. That statement is more than a little shocking. The Company's treatment of him obviously wasn't humane, but he never would have suspected Claire to know anything about the Company's way of dealing with things. ]

I--I'm not with the Company. [ Not with the Company anymore. There was that brief period of time where he could have been considered a Company agent, but it had always felt more like a debt he was forced to pay in return for becoming clean. Nothing good had come of that agreement, so he could only imagine what Claire felt when she thought of the Company.] I'm just a painter. Look, Claire--

[ He pauses for a moment, and realizes that the Hitomis are so glitchy, Peter could easily listen in on this conversation. After some fumbling with the buttons, he switches the video to private.]

Peter lost his memories. I don't know what happened to him. He's told me all he knows, but he doesn't know enough to fit everything together. He didn't even recognize me at first when I showed up.

[She doesn't like this news at all. The more he speaks, the more she frowns, until she looks like someone has kicked her. This guy isn't with the Company, but he knows her? Peter's lost his memories, which means he probably won't even know her. Which means his being there is essentially useless. Painful and useless.

She looks close to crying, but ducks her head so Isaac won't see it.]

But...if Peter is here, then we should help him get back his memories. Shouldn't we? He needs to remember everything.

You can't tell him.

[ The words escape his mouth in a rush much too quick for him to cut off. Isaac still doesn't know why he feels the need to protect Peter from himself, but he knows it's not going to be possible forever. Peter does need to know, but Isaac thoroughly intends to slow own the process. ]

He remembers me now and he knows about his abilities, but he doesn't need to know that he nearly destroyed New York. He doesn't need to know that he could have caused the deaths of thousands of people.

[ He pauses to sigh wearily. It's tiring, trying to keep himself from bringing the explosion up around Peter just out of sheer bitterness. It would probably be a good idea to explain himself a bit, though. Finally. Just to prove to Claire that he isn't making this whole thing up somehow. ]

Look--I don't know you. The only reason I even met you father or know who you are is because I painted you. I painted Peter too, and New York being destroy. That's what I can do. I can see the future. I've only had to see these things and it's enough to rip me apart, but he's lived them. I don't know how he felt about everything before he lost his memory, but--just don't mention the explosion. Don't mention Sylar. If anything happened to his brother, don't mention that either. Not yet.

[She hears the rush in his voice and it surprises her, mostly because she assumes that anyone that knows Peter would also want him to get his memory back as soon as possible. The admission of how he knows her knocks her for too much of a loop, though, and she's not able to do much of anything for a few moments but gape at him.]

So you're the one that started the whole Save the Cheerleader, Save the World thing. I guess that means it's good to finally meet you.

[She knows that addressing the Peter situation is more important right now, but she needs to think that over before promising she won't tell him things. She can at least agree to not mention Sylar, she doesn't even want to think about a monster like him.]
