[The device flickers on, shifting as though on shakey ground and there is the dull shuffle of footsteps, skin on wood. Squeaking boards. The source seems to retreat in an unhurried fashion and it's quiet for some time, though there is a muffled murmur from the window. And the minutes drag on and on. And on. The view is of a hotel room, window

Hey. What do you go by here?

An individual usually introduces oneself before requesting another's name.

Matt. And I was only asking so I didn't blow whatever cover you've got going here.

Mello's friend.
[He murmurs it absently, recalling an offhanded mention of the man while he and his successor spoke the prior night. Ah - and there might have been a Matt at the orphanage as well. Yes.]
It's a pleasure, Matt. Mm, you may call me Ryuuzaki.

You don't remember us talking before?

As far as I recall, I have spent three days here. In Kannagara. [As it has been called.] Is there something significant I should know of?
Reply
You know about B? Here, not in general.
Reply
I've heard of his presence, yes.

You know Mello was, like, babysitting him 'cause--
[He does manage to stop himself before he says something horribly damning, like because you couldn't be bothered to or because when you say 'jump,' Mello asks 'how high?', and finishes, bitterly:] 'cause no one else would do it. Right?

[The other's words were toned more like an accusation than briefing. And was implies that he no longer handles this task.]
Matt finds this relevant at present? [And no, he doesn't intend to be condescending.]
Reply
Yeah, Matt does. B's your problem, not anyone else's.

[Honestly, he has attempted a lesser variant of this and, as of present, there is a blond tailing him persistently. That said, he doesn't enjoy being given indirect orders by those within the right to do so and especially not those of this man's standing.]
Matt needs to consider his position before speaking.
[He sounds distracted, sifting through the teas spread across the table and occasionally taking a whiff.]
Mello is in the running to succeed me. I will expect certain things from him. However, those expectations do not force his compliance. I will act as I deem appropriate -as will Mello- and these actions may not align with what you would prefer them to be.
If you are unhappy with his part in this arrangement, you should be aware that he is an adult and so you may speak with him.

[Even for someone who cares as little about the succession, or about L himself, as Matt, there's a kind of thrill to calling him 'man.' Like swearing in a church, or something.]
You don't remember, I'm filling in the blanks.

I do appreciate it. ... Ooh, rasberry honey...
[Eighty percent of his appraisal is being directed towards the array of tea packets littering the wooden table.]
Is there anything else worthy of note?
Reply
Yagami was here, too.
[A lot will depend on how this L takes that bombshell.]
Reply
I know.
[Though he, admittedly, did not know it to be a past tense presence - and so shortly. They spoke not two days ago.
Murmurs of appreciation as he pays the owner, likely being unknowingly overcharged. Not that it matters.]
