This is First Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, Amestrian military. I would be very grateful to anyone who could tell me where I am, and how far it is to Central City. I am unsure how I came to be here, but it is vital that I return as quickly as possible.

I would be most appreciative for any information or assistance provided.

First Lieutenant Hawkeye. I am Her Holiness the Keeper of the Sacred Blue Spring, Yun, Chief of State, Head of the Church, and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Theocracy of Simulacrum.

While I do not believe 'Amestria' is a nation with which we have established diplomatic relations, if you were to provide me with more information I may be able to work this out.

This is a place called Kannagara. I am afraid that you will probably be here for...

...maybe quite a while. I am sorry.

You came here because a being of unutterable caprice styling itself a god willed that you come here. It is a thing of immense power, I am sorry to say.

A god? [Half skeptical, half actually frightened of the word.]

I haven't heard of your nation, but Amestris has no good relations with neighboring countries. We are in a... difficult political situation at the moment. That is why I cannot afford to spend much time here. Is there a train station nearby?

A god. I do apologise.

I sympathise. My nation's situation is also very precarious, being involved in a war that we want no part of as a consequence for having lost a previous war. I am sorry but I do not believe that there is any way to reach a train station by human power from here. We seem to be in our own self-contained world.

[What to say now...? Oh dear Tempus Spatium, how to deal with this?]

My name is Yun. Um...nice to meet you?

... what god? It's not called Truth, is it?

Our situation is somewhat the same, only we have been involved in a series of wars because we have won all the previous conflicts. Still, cessation of hostilities is advisable.

Hawkeye. Pleased to meet you, Yun. But I'd be more pleased if I could catch a train.

I was actually told that its name was 'He Who Invites' or something along those lines.

...If you have won all of the previous wars why do you need to fight more? Of course cessation of hostilities is advisable, damn you! What kind of insanely idiotic thing would it be to say otherwise?

Please tell me, Hawkeye, that you are not of an expansionist or an imperialist bent--as a person, I mean. If you are, there may be...issues.

Oh. [She's not sure if that's a good or a bad thing. Probably bad.]

[Her voice goes very cold.] There is no need to speak that way, Yun. I'm only a lieutenant, I don't make those decisions, but I also try not to openly speak out against my superior officers.

I assure you, I have no wish to fight and conquer. I do not want to build an empire. I am a soldier, but I fight to protect.

I apologise.

When...when I was a sibylla--

--well, I did not like what had happened to my country. So I took it over, in a coup of love.

I apologise. I really do.

[Yun feels really, really awful about herself now.]

The way you spat my name. Does it mean you would prefer to be addressed by your rank? If so, I will gladly address you as Lieutenant if you will accord me the respect to a Head of State and call me 'ma'am'.

I apologise. Empires are a sore point for me. But I should not have expected you to just...know that.

... a coup?

[Well, she's pretty well convinced they're not in Amestris right now, so she may as well be honest.]

I do not like what is happening in my country, either. My commander and I and the rest of my unit are currently involved in an insurrection to take power and stop the wars. I was removed during a crucial moment. That is why I need to get home.

I apologize as well. It was rude of me to snap at you, regardless of what you said. You may call me what you like, and I will refer to you as ma'am, if that is what you choose.

Because I loved my predecessor, I killed her.

It makes sense in context.

If you do not insist on 'Lieutenant', I do not insist on 'Ma'am', though I might prefer it. I apologise for the misunderstanding. If you are attempting to stop continued wars, you have all of my respect and honour. War is a terrible thing. I believe that any true soldier should hate war.

[Her voice goes soft, sad.] I can understand that, completely.

I do not insist on being referred to by my rank, Ma'am. Call me Hawkeye.

I agree. The job of a soldier is to protect the people of his country. And the best way to do that is to stop needless conflict.

Honestly, it surprises me that you understand so well, not knowing how things happened...

Very well, Hawkeye. You may call me Yun in that case.

I am so glad that we see eye-to-eye in the end--though I was not a soldier but a priestess forced into combat against my will.

I can understand being willing to kill someone because you care about them.

My commander is also a childhood friend. I committed myself to kill him rather than allow him to become a monster he would hate. It is a promise he took from me when I became his bodyguard. But I have been lucky, so far, and I have not had to go through with it.

I am a soldier, but it was never my will to fight and destroy. I only ever wanted to use my strength to protect those I love, my country. I hope there are not many people who go into combat just for the love of battle.

My situation was...different, very different.

But I am glad that you have some understanding.

As I said, you have all of my respect and honour, Riza Hawkeye.

[Another voice he recognizes. And while it should occur to him that her talking about Central rather than Anatole means that this is not the one he's come to know over the past months, the lack of familiarity here causes him to latch onto it, somewhat instinctively.]

So you're here as well, Riza Hawkeye.

Scar? Are you all right? Do you know how we got here?

[He was being awfully casual about this place.]

Have you seen anyone else? Edward or the Colonel? The chimeras?
