As briefly as possible- a bunch of internet entrepreneurs, with the backing of a variety of companies such as Harper Collins, decided to set up a for-profit archive to host fanfiction. Said archive is pretty ugly and has a fairly dodgy TOS, which gives the archive owners the right to edit and/or redistribute anything posted there, while handing off any legal responsibility for posting to the writers in the case of lawsuits. They've also demonstrated a pretty complete lack of understanding of how fandom on LJ functions in their interactions with various people. And their advertising is truly hideous.

In response, a lot of people have written essays on why it would be a Bad Idea to post fic there, and some of them (headed by astolat) have decided they should set up their own multi-fandom, anything-goes archive as competition.

In other news, I'm glad you're still alive, and I hope work gets better soon.
