Those were the first words Donghae ever used to confess to someone. He had been an awkward pre-teen with a limited vocabulary and a horrible sense of timing.
"Oh, I'm sorry," she had said, the first love of his life. "But Jooseung confessed to me yesterday so I said I'd go out with him."
Shot down before it ever had the chance to fly, ah, his first love. And then his second. And then his third...
Now, Donghae is twenty one years old, and he has decided to stop counting, because he has grown into an awkward young adult with only a slightly less limited vocabulary and the lack of courage to try anymore.
"What about the people in your company, Donghae? Why don't you ask them out?" his mother asks sometimes when he calls home to give her updates on his life.
"It's weird, Mom, I don't want to talk about it."
"Okay, okay, we'll talk about your health instead. Have you been eating enough? You look so tired on TV..."
"I'm okay, Mom."
But he really isn't. He's lonely, and tired of being lonely, and he just wants to be with someone who wants just as much to be with him.
"What are you thinking about now?" Siwon asks him one morning as they get ready for a show.
"I want to be a boyfriend," Donghae whines.
Siwon raises his eyebrows and says nothing. It's enough to distract Donghae from his woes for the moment, though, because he spends the next ten minutes trying to make his eyebrows go up like that.
"It's like, when I meet someone I like, my brain stops working," he complains to Kangin when they are on their way to an interview.
"So if your brain's working it means there's no one you like?" Kibum asks.
"I... I guess." Donghae thinks that's a strange question to ask, but he shrugs it off.
"But then your brain never actually works, does it?" Kangin asks, and Donghae is distracted again because now he has to throw Kangin out of a moving vehicle.
"Calm down," Kibum laughs. "Don’t worry about it. You're a good guy, there's someone for you out there."
"Maybe you can't function around them because they're not right for you," Shindong says later that night when they’re having supper at their dorm.
"Like he's allergic?" Hankyung asks.
"I'm allergic to Kang Hodong-ssi. Every time I'm with him I wind up doing something stupid. Ah, my image is ruined forever..." Heechul drowns his sorrows in a bowl of steaming ramen.
"Don't worry about it," Eeteuk says, patting Donghae on his shoulder before they retire for bed. "Someone will find you eventually."
"Yeah, but when?" Donghae sighs and turns in for one more cold and lonely night.
"I want a girl who's really smart," Sungmin says the next day as they're sitting in yet another changing room for yet another show.
"I like it when a girl is really good at computers. Like she sits up straight and types really fast, then she clicks the mouse like this and this and this..." Kyuhyun imitates his ideal girl. "Girls look cool like that."
"Do you think I look cool?" Ryeowook asks Yehsung, who is on the other side of the room trying on every piece of jewellery the stylist has lain out. Donghae hasn't changed much, but Yehsung hasn't either.
"The coolest," Yehsung says, blowing him a kiss.
"That's great," Donghae tells them. "That's wonderful. But what about me?"
"I wouldn't worry," Yehsung says flippantly.
"I'm really sick of people telling me not to worry," Donghae mutters even as Sungmin pats him on the back and tells him to be patient.
"Hyuk," he moans, barging into Eunhyuk's room that night and flopping down on his bed. "Tell me not to worry."
"What?" Eunhyuk prods at Donghae with a foot to make him move, then sinks into the space next to him.
"Tell me not to worry. There's someone out there for me. I won't be alone forever."
"Don't worry, there's someone out there for you, you won't be alone forever."
"At least say it like you mean it!" Donghae kicks Eunhyuk in the shins and smacks him with his own pillow.
"Donghae!" Eunhyuk moves fast, really, really fast, and suddenly Donghae is on his back, staring up at Eunhyuk, who looks scared shitless but determined anyway.
"I like you," Eunhyuk says. "I really, really, really, really, really, really like you."
"Oh." Donghae blinks, realising all of a sudden that Eunhyuk is always there in the background, that Siwon was raising his eyebrows because Eunhyuk was sitting behind Donghae, that Kangin wasn't being mean, he was trying to make Eunhyuk feel better, that Donghae was as blind as a bat, but everyone else wasn't because they knew what they were talking about when they said, when they said...
"Oh," Donghae murmurs, realising all of a sudden that Eunhyuk has the most beautiful smile in the world.
"You stupidhead," Eunhyuk says, before he leans down and kisses Donghae until Donghae is dizzy and breathless.
The next morning Donghae sits at the breakfast table, glowing, as Eunhyuk tries to make him breakfast.
"Told you not to worry," Eeteuk whispers as he walks past. Sungmin gives him a thumbs up.
