My hero

There were times when he knew he thought too much.

He knew he had a habit of spacing out sometimes, forgetting his lines or what was being talked about. People kept repeating that to him. Saying he wasn't paying attention, that he should concentrate and speak more.  But it was hard. He wasn't like Sho, who could talk about any given subject with authority and class. Nor was he like Jun who could analyze and compress his thoughts, and deliver a full-blown speech in a matter of seconds. He was just his own slow self with his mumblings and low attention span.

It wasn't like he was of no use, he knew he could sing and dance quite well, but sometimes he worried if it was enough for Arashi, if 'he' was enough. All the members were so talented and well-spoken, surely they could do without him. It felt as if all the time one of them had to correct his words, saying “that's what you tried to say Leader, ne?” or “we're sorry, that's just how our Leader is like..”. It was all said in a kind way, understandingly, but he still every time he felt like he had betrayed them. His fumbling mind had betrayed them. It was a mystery to him why they insisted in calling him 'leader' when they all knew he was anything but.

It was his life, they were his friend his co-workers, his family. They were more than individuals when they came together, they were Arashi, and it was an intoxicating feeling being a part of something that great..and yet sometimes. Sometimes he even thought that being part of this group was a mistake. In all the things that mattered, he was not good enough for them.

Arashi knew that Ohno Satoshi was not slow. It was just the surface. They all knew it, and they wished there was someway to convay this, as they watched him lost deep in his dark thoughts again. Their Leader wasn't good with words, he had a wandering mind and a stiff tongue, but he was always there when they needed him. Somehow, there was no one faster to be there for them when they needed comfort or advice, or even to be reasured that the path they had chosen together was right.

Sometimes all that was needed was a gentle touch on the shoulder, an understanding smile, a nod, a funny random sentence.. for it all to feel right again. That was all. It took one man who would watch over them; who would notice a slight change in the air, the smallest signs when something was wrong. He would be there watching, always: making it all better just by excisting, thinking, knowing. It was a comfort they knew they could never appreciate enough.

On a day like this Arashi wished they could show it, more than ever. Today he had been thinking again. All morning they had been talking to his empty face, getting nothing but silence in return. Everyone watched carefully him working as usual, worried for his soulless singing. They weren't worried for the huge crowd that was there to see them, but for their Leader's unhappy eyes..

"There is a planned choreocraphy for this part", Sho kept thinking; "I shouldn't..I'll mess up everyone's steps.." But he did anyway. In the middle of Kitto Daijoubu he brushed past surprised Aiba who indeed lost his steps, but it didn't matter because you couldn't exactly hear the song anymore over the crowd. What Sho had forgotten, when he ignored his rapping in order to hug his Satoshi-kun tightly, was that he had his headset on and ready to pick up his every word. And that's why, even over the roaring arena, they heard him say; "You're not alone. Don't you ever think that! We are here, the five of us.."

It wasn't exactly the most coherent choise of words he had heard from Sho-kun but the meaning within them landed on Ohno's heart and warmed it up to the core, and it felt like it would never be cold again.

It turned out to be hands down the sappiest consert in the history of Arashi conserts, and that's saying a lot. Aiba broke down and cried right after Sho's Kitto Daijoubu shenanigans and he wouldn't stop until Sho gave him a hug too. And even then Nino had to pull his pants down in front of the crowd to make him laugh again (the laughing was mostly due to Nino's face when founding out who had stole his lucky underwear).

Aiba went to huggle Leader in the end of Subarashiki Sekai, because he thought Leader was just so great, like the greatest Leader in the whole world!! The crowd loved it and one of the members of M.A.D.E. told them afterwards that his girlfriend had heard their love all the way to her home. In Chiba. Of course everyone knew he was a big fat liar but they forgave him because it 'was' kinda cool, and he 'had' spent too much time with Nino lately.

Jun waited Ohno after his solo ended. He brought an extra towel and, while helping Leader dry up right there on stage, he leaned down and kissed his head. The reason Jun wiped his eyes afterwards singing Smile was because he was sweating and nothing else. What. He has a soft spot for his Leader. Nino, who was singing Leader's parts while the man was changing, had to stop and let Aiba take mostly over because his voice was shaking so badly. He still swatted Sho's steadying hand away from his shoulder (after a minute or so).

Te emotions were overflowing and only the huge amount of routine under every kind of pressure imaginable during their JE years allowed them to continue singing. It was hard though and half of the time someone else had to sing a part not his own, but they managed it. Together.

Their last of the last of the last song was playing and Ohno was smiling so widely it hurt his cheeks. He felt warm and safe and his voice finally rang high above just like he wanted. His hand was clasped in Nino's for the third song in a row and, although it was sweaty and held on too tightly and made the waving pretty difficult, it was the only thing right now that kept him from flying away for all the love that was bubbling inside.

Finally, when the last of the last of the last song ended, Nino reached his arms around Oh-chan to hug him tightly and whispered softly to his ear; “You fool.”

The cheering of the crowd was deafening but there are somethings you hear with your heart. Riida's smile was shown on the screen that moment and right then it would have been enough to melt one half of the North Pole and still shine through the other. He was part of it after all, together they were Arashi.
