OMG. This is where you're going to leave off? This might be even crueler than if the last chapter was the last one you had written, lol! I'm so glad Luna and Charlie survived, even if they have no idea who they are. Got worried for a moment there after Xeno died and everyone else started dropping. Can't wait to find out the why's and whatnot of Victoire being protected, hope you are writing quickly, I really want to see how all of this ties together.
I've already written another chapter, and started a second. But I'm going to write another chunk before I post again. Don't know how big that chunk is going to be, or how long it'll be before I post, but now you know.
Poor Charlie and Luna-though at least they're still alive! Interesting that Victoire kept her memory-obviously it was the information about the Oligarchy that he didn't wish disseminated. Interesting that he chose to take all of their memories away. It will be interesting to see if/how memory loss effects the two of them-Luna in particular, since her brain-power is undeniable, yet one can't help but wonder how much of her eccentricity comes from her upbringing....
I'm hoping that the memory loss isn't permanent, though that's probably a vain hope.
So the Oligarchy... is not monolithic, apparently. Hmmm. And is neither Good nor Evil, it seems. Hmmm again. Non-dualistic? ;-)
Without giving too much away, I can say that it was a brutal choice for me to do this. It was a decision that came to me as the chapter developed. I knew that the Oligarchy wouldn't let them off untouched, but I also knew that a death would kill not only the plot but the tone of the rest of the series.
Well, between this and the scene with Antaeus, you certainly served notice that the Oligarchy plays for keeps!
There were a couple of things I loved in this chapter that I forgot to mention-the two mental sidebars in the midst of the crisis: the exploration of the relationship between Luna's intelligence and her faith, which led straight into her wonderful use of the Symphalian's feather against the bird itself; and Victoire's thoughts about how the older generation grew up knowing they were going to fight, which led into her own attack on the Faceless Man.
BTW, I assume that he was NOT one of the Circle of Thirteen? Or was he the Greek Oligarch? Is a spot now open in the Circle? I know you can't answer these question, but hmmmmmm....
It's a nice touch, too, that the different members of the Oligarchy cast spells with which we are (mostly) familiar, not in JKR's "dog" Latin, but in the classical language of their own tradition
I was amazed JUST how hard it was to find online translators for some of these languages, especially ones that don't put the words into the native alphabet.
A native Greek, a native Norwegian, a native Japanese would look at what I've written and shake their heads, probably, since it could easily come across as stilted. But that's automatic translation for you.
As for Darkness Man's relation to the Circle of Thirteen... That will be discussed sooner rather than later. It'll be a mystery that only holds as long as it takes for me to post the next chunk of chapters.
I wonder... does Luna's err.. original way of thinking a byproduct of her childhood experiences, or is it something she was born with. Do we see a completely different Luna because her early life no longer affects her worldview, or is she able to keep seeing life from her own odd angle. Thhs is the question that will drive me bananas till you post the next Luna chapter.
Hey, thanks for reading! Always cool to get someone new to the party.
I guess you could say that, yeah, After the Flaw was always a build-up to Oligarchy. Originally I had actually planned for this to be a part of the original AtF sequence. At the very least, I wanted to bring a new threat back to the magical world. But after I decided that it would be a lot of story in a short timeframe it would be just easier to end AtF at the convenient time of Teddy's proposal.
There's more to come. I'm still pretty new to writing Big Mystery, so I hope it's enjoyable to everyone. Thanks again for reading!
The next "chunk" should be coming in the next two or three weeks, another three or four chapters before I take a brief break for a fic comm challenge due in mid-July.
