Watch

Confession: I have only read Watchmen once.

Yes, I know, I should turn in my nerd cred right now, but its true. I bought it ten years ago, read it, was confused fairly often as I read it, then proceeded to loan it out to numerous people and NEVER SAW IT AGAIN.

Seriously. No clue where it went. I've asked four different people if I gave it to them, and no dice. I always loan it out with Dark Knight Returns, and I'm currently staring at my copy of DKR. So, yeah, it sucks. I need to buy a new copy next time I get a Borders coupon emailed to me.

But, anyway, that's where I'm coming from as I saw the movie Saturday afternoon. So, as someone who's only read the comic once and absorbed maybe 10% of it (Mostly the interrogation scene and Naked Nuclear Dream Sequence), I can say that Watchmen: The Movie was quite satisfying. A bit long, yes. Probably could have cut 15 minutes just by trimming the fat from some of the scenes. Can probably get pretty confusing to non-fans at times, which ultimately hurts it. But as someone who HAS read the comic, and as someone who WAS confused about what was going on in the comic the one time I read it, I can say that the movie makes me think I can go in with a clearer head about it.

Good movie, fantastic visuals. PLEASE remember that this isn't a "super hero movie." You can't bring your kids to it and buy toys afterwards. Its R for a reason: broken arms with bones sticking out of the skin, exploded people hanging from ceilings, realistic sex scenes, suggestions of rape and child mutilation (and sometimes more than suggestions). And Dr. Manhattan just has no problem wandering around with his wedding tackle out there in all its glory.

So, you've been warned: No kids, despite the giant ship that looks like an owl's head.

Then again:

If you haven't seen it, I say take a shot.  I'm curious to see what you think, especially if you haven't read the source material (considered the cornerstone of modern comic books and the greatest graphic novel of all time).  If you have seen it (or haven't, but are curious), the company who was hired to make the opening credits now have the opening credits online.  They're fantastic.  And they're Dylan.
