My Weekend So Far

I finally got my first look at The Bridge yesterday afternoon.  They've made a lot of progress, considering it took them so long before they could even touch the wreckage.  Almost all of the cement is out of the water, except for one chunk that's on the north shore of the river.  They were pulling up some of the metal cross-beams when I was there, and I guess they already have enough of the river open where the lock-and-dam is back up and running.

Beyond that, there's still a lot left.  Both of the major chunks, the twisted stuff on the south shore and the fallen arch piece on the north, are still untouched.  Even the three train cars that were flattened are still there.  Not that I'm too surprised.  The river was the priority, since it's, you know, the Mississippi.  But they still have a lot of work ahead of them, most of it occurring in the soon-to-arrive Minnesota winter, if they want to get it built by the end of 2008 (which I personally think is too fast, but what can you do?).

Sign of where my life has come, though.  On the south side, the bridge is still there.  They've cleared off all of the cars, and the only thing that's non-bridgework left is one lone portapotty.  I spent three summers in college building them as my summer job, so the first thing that went through my head was "I wonder if I built that one."

Anyway, so that was that.  I hope I can get back there again soon.  I probably will at some point.

Chapter was posted yesterday.  New chapter's being worked on as we speak, and it looks like it's another one that's going to be split.  At first I was writing it just as a "here's what's happened, from this perspective" story, but I'm adding what I hope is a nice little bit between Harry and Susan in there.  Might or might not be done today or tonight, depending on how long it takes for me to move
xturtle.  But it should be done within the next few days.
