Bye bye, Learn to Counter

Jun 28, 2015 03:28

And now, with the inevitable removal of Learn to Counter from my Feedly list, I officially no longer follow any quasi-/pseudo-professional gaming news/blog sites whatsoever. Any awareness about future video game shit will simply come from Steam/GOG release/sale notifications, most of which I ignore anyway because very few of them tend to interest me much at all, and whatever actually cool stuff I may happen to hear about in SBFP or Angry Joe videos or second hand via owsf2000 or rabbitucker or whoever else. Basically, what I am saying is that I'm just going to rely on essentially "word of mouth" for whatever trickle of video game related news I consume from now on.

Want to know what finally led me to drop LTC? It was the following paragraph from near the end of Mr. Lowell's impression of Arkham Knight:

"Otherwise, I'm sure the game is going to take a ton of shit because the scrublord PC gamers were too poor to buy a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One and chose to download the game on the PC, and they'll be taking it out on the game. Don't listen to them, they're morons. This is the first Arkham game which teeters on something I'd consider 'good'."

This guy has always been something of a caustic critic, and for a long time I actually liked that about him, because he usually tempered that with a seemingly deep well of knowledge and insight about the video game industry. Now, though, I've become increasingly dissatisfied with his articles, mainly because of unnecessary, infantile little digs like that one (well, that and nonsensical, unfunny, bullshit attempts at humor such as this, which I didn't even bother to make a post about, it was such nonsensical, unfunny bullshit). For those three or four of you out there who have read my own rants against the video game industry over the years, just stop and think about that for a moment. This is a guy who is too much even for me. At the very least, I'll give him this much credit: he has never stooped to sucking industry cock like so many other "journalists" out there which I dropped for those reasons.

To get back to the above quoted straw/camel moment that led me to kicking him and his site to the curb, first he insults PC gamers who are justifiably angry over the atrocious PC release of Arkham Knight as "scrublords" because they don't want a PS4 or X-bone (or are "too poor to buy" them, as he arrogantly claims). What the fuck is he on about with that shit? Is he twelve years old or something? I'd have thought he'd have left that "PC vs console" war horseshit behind in middle school with all the other petty juvenile horseshit. Anyway, I don't recall hearing anyone critical of the PC version saying that the game itself is bad, as he seems to be implying. Just that the port of it was horrid. Maybe they are and I'm just not seeing it?

Hell though, if anyone is badmouthing the game itself, it's him, given that he then follows up by expressing the... let's just say... incredibly audacious opinion that Arkham Knight is the only "good" Arkham game so far, and apparently only barely so... wow, man. Just wow. Talk about impossibly high standards. That is a textbook example of exactly why people say that whole "opinions are like assholes..." thing, right there. As such, I'll just toss his own words right back in his face: Don't listen to him, he's a moron. The other Arkham games are great.

(Oh, and there's the fact that his forum, what tiny bit I could stomach of it, seems to just be an echo chamber infested with all sorts of lickspittles and sycophants.)

Bye bye, The GhettoLearn to Counter. You were the final hold out in my now utterly dead interest in video games so-called "journalism." And you fell from such a high pedestal, too. Well, the bright side is that I guess I won't have to concern myself with this kind of asinine shit anymore.

game industry stuff (2015), learn to counter, video game journalism, games (2015), rant
