"Friday Night Fisticuffs - Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate"

The first fifteen minutes or so of this video unequivocally demonstrate what is wrong with modern video gaming. I was vomiting a little bit, too, Woolie. The fact that you cannot even play the game until you download those costume catalogs (which are, from what I can tell, free, but required compatibility packs for all those buyable costumes, ( Read more... )

Yes, the "ultimate" in that game probably refers more to the ultimate level of DLC whoring. And it's probably worse than what they experienced.

They have a free version of the game called "DOA 5 Ultimate Core Fighters". It lives up to it's name - you have access to only 3 characters and it's basically Vs mode only - except for the DLC you've purchased for it.

And the real kicker is that the DLC is completely unique to Ulimate. The original DOA5 game doesn't recognize any of the DLC and won't use any of it. And vice versa. They really should have just called it "DOA Ultimate" and left that 5 out of there to avoid confusion.

And yes it can cause confusion. I've put DOA entirely in the permanent shitlist over this.

That seems to be the new thing with fighting games these days. Releasing a "free" version with only two or three fighters unlocked. The new X-bone Killer Instinct game did the same thing, iirc. I wonder if someone takes the "free" version and then unlocks everything, would the company end up getting more money than if the same person had just bought the full version (minus all other DLC, of course) from the get go. Probably so, otherwise they most likely wouldn't do it that way in the first place.

That I'm not sure, but I'm willing to bet the answer is yes. Considering for DOA5U, the cost to unlock the "core cast" of the game is over half the price of the full game - and I'm not sure if that actually unlocks storymode, etc.

All I know is that I got burnt on the entire thing with the one DLC thing I had bought for it - The titles of the game confused me enough to make me assume that the DLC would work with both games. (As is the case with some fighting games - I just presumed "ultimate" was just another version of DOA5.) It doesn't. Not sure if the DOA crew should be happy or sad that I'm not the omg-imma-sue type. Instead I'm the "Well fuck you, I ain't buying anything else from you again" type.

Logic and rational thought doesn't apply here. It doesn't need to. They pissed me off, I don't need them to begin with, so I'm not giving them any more money.
