That article there is the first I've heard of Facebook buying the company making the Oculus Rift. My reaction to the news is: What. o_O

The reason it's the first article you saw is probably because it was only announced like a day or two ago or something similar. Until they officially announced they were making the deal, they didn't even hint to their backers let alone anyone else that they were meeting with the suits at facebook.
The reasons Facebook want it would likely be because they expect it to be popular for multi-user type things I'm sure. As in, the next social outlet. Buy the tech and company now, get them to add facebook as it is now (oh hey already done.) then get the usual practices in place with marketing your information to companies and advertising directly to you. I can't say I'd be surprised if before the rift fully launches it'll require you to log into facebook.
