"Sorry, PlayStation 4 Games May Still Carry DRM"

Jun 12, 2013 15:18

That title is rather misleading, based on the actual content of the article itself. What I got out of this article is that the PS4 will simply be doing pretty much the same thing the PS3 is already doing now as far as DRM is concerned, which is to just let the publishers do whatever they want, good or bad. I was not expecting otherwise, and anyone who did was merely fooling themselves.

However, reading some of the comments under that article where people are defending Microsoft and saying "well, it's the same with the Xbox One" makes me figuratively pull out my hair at the abject stupidity on display. No, it is not the same thing. Sony has not directly built into their console the same sort of asinine "must phone home daily (or hourly depending on the circumstances) or you can't play your games" BS infrastructure that the X-bone will have, nor have they included that stupid "can't trade more than once and can only trade to someone who's been on your friend list for 30 days and can only resell at 'authorized' retailers" crap either. I can't believe that people are seriously this ignorant and clueless about this as to say that the X-bone and the PS4 are exactly the same in this regard, when they are clearly not. Unless there's been some breaking news that I haven't seen yet in which Microsoft has come out and backpedaled on their inane crap, and if there has, then please someone point me to it. It would be great to see some good news for a change that shows that Microsoft actually isn't as retarded as they've made themselves look over the past few weeks or so. Either that or people are just falling for the apparent Microsoft ploy of trying to make it look like they are completely blameless since they're leaving it up to the publishers as to whether or not the publishers use this system that they, Microsoft, are implementing that "enables" the publishers to "allow" players to trade their games or not.

The only way that the two consoles are the same is that the PS4 will require subscription to play online, just as the X-bone will and just as the Xbox 360 has always done, but which the PS3 does not. Again, as I said before, I think that's kind of shitty on Sony's part, but I personally don't care myself because I don't care about multiplayer in the first place. But again, no, this is not the same thing as the X-bone requiring a 24-hour (and 1-hour if you're playing on another console) phone home thing or else no games will work at all. That people are (perhaps deliberately) confusing these two separate issues just boggles my mind. It's not exactly rocket science. This, more than absolutely anything else, is what is wrong with the game industry these days. Gamers are too fucking clueless about what's going on, often proudly and militantly so (just look at how often the people defending Microsoft in those comments toss about the word "fanboy" for example, which is ironic given the fact that if anyone is displaying fanboy tendencies, it's them). And the companies are taking full advantage of it.

Well, either that, or the people who are dubiously defending Microsoft in those comments are merely paid plants. That's always a possibility as well. That said, though, if those people are paid plants, then they're not doing their jobs very well, because rather than making me think better of the X-bone, they're just making me think that they, the ones doing the commenting, are complete imbeciles.

x-bone, ps4, microsoft sucks, game industry stuff, games, rant
