Okay, decision reached (Sorry
explorer_fam), I'll be going with the sci-fi. Decided this because I had a bit of an insight that I think will make the story wholeheartedly kick ass.
What I'm going to try to do is write a time-travelling story, told in important "chunks" through history. I'll be going chronologically, but not necessarily in order of how things happen for the protagonist. See, the important part thing is that the protagonist is going to be travelling only backwards in time from period to period, while his companion will be travelling only forward. That way, the protagonist starts the story knowing his companion intimately, while the companion knows nothing about the protagonist. As the story goes along, the protagonist knows less and less about the companion, while the companion's familiarity grows.
I know I've seen time-travelling stories in the past where a character will meet someone that knows them well, but only because of events that happen in the future. I can't, however, put a finger on a story that has a constant mismatch of familiarity like what I'm thinking of writing. I can hope (just hope) that this is my one (1) unique idea for this year.
Wish me luck, I'm going to be hashing out the time "periods" and major events soon!
