Who: Belcoot, Geddoe
When: After Shoon's visit, in the middle of the night.
Where: Infirmary
What: Geddoe sits by Belcoot's side, watching over the younger man while he rests, when Belcoot gains consciousness again.
Belcoot: *despite trying to get to sleep after Shoon's visit, he's been falling in and out of consciousness all night, unable to sleep due to his injuries. This time, he's stirring again*
Geddoe: *has been sitting silent in a chair beside Belcoot's bed since Shoon left, arms folded, head down, eye closed - but not asleep - not caring at all what time of night it is*
Belcoot: *he doesn't realize that there's anyone around when he comes to, and after a few uncomfortable seconds of him trying to cope with his pain silently while shifting, he can't help but hiss in pain when he only ends up moving too much*
Geddoe: *raises his head slowly and murmurs very quietly, so as not to startle the injured man* Belcoot? You're awake...
Belcoot: *he freezes in his movements upon hearing the voice, not quite comprehending who it is straight away -- it takes him a few seconds* ... G-geddoe?
Geddoe: Yes, it's me. *unfolds his arms and sits up a little*
Belcoot: *it's dark in the room, and he can't exactly tell if it's morning or night in his dazed state* ... What time is it?
Geddoe: Very late. Probably after midnight, I'm not sure. I've lost track of time.
Belcoot: *he forces himself to sit up, ignoring his pain for a bit* What're you doing here...?
Geddoe: *leans in to carefully assist Belcoot sitting up* I've been here on and off since you were brought in. I don't think anyone wanted to argue with me, they let me sit with you as long as I wanted.
Belcoot: *he appreciates the assistance, leaning against his pillows and supporting himself with his good arm* Heh... I'm not surprised, but you shouldn't have. I'm okay.
Geddoe: No, you're not. I'm sure you will be in time, but... *serious face* Will you tell me what happened?
Belcoot: What happened? *he tries to think for a second, but then shakes his head slightly* ... First, I want you to tell me if everything's alright now. What's going on?
Geddoe: Nothing. Which bothers me as much as if something were going on. The handful of us who want to hold someone responsible for your injury have been shouted down by the majority wishing for peace and quiet.
Belcoot: No one will hold responsibility for my injury but myself. *looks a bit annoyed with himself, but then moves on* Master Thomas hasn't been found or even heard of lately, then?
Geddoe: *shakes his head slowly* There hasn't been anything on that front. Sir Salome Harras, of the Zexen Knights, has stepped in to substitute for him, and organize things, but apart from that...there's nothing.
Belcoot: ... I see. Things aren't looking good then. *frowns, and gingerly touches the bandages on his side*
Geddoe: *sets a hand firmly, but carefully, on Belcoot's shoulder* Are you feeling all right?
Belcoot: Yes. *obviously lying, but tries to sit up a little more confidently, anyway* These wounds aren't as bad as they seem.
Geddoe: Come, now. I'm not one of the kindhearted young ones you have to protect. You can be honest with me. *tries to catch his eye* After all, I let you go and do it. I didn't stop you.
Belcoot: That doesn't mean a thing -- it was a foolish act in the first place. If you had tried to stop me, I would've done it regardless. *can't exactly manage to look at Geddoe*
Geddoe: I know, which is why I didn't try harder. *sighs lightly* Lyon was angry with me for not doing so. I honestly didn't expect it would come to this, though. *leaves his hand where it is, on Belcoot's shoulder* I must know what happened. If you'll tell me.
Belcoot: Lyon... *he glances at his hands, choosing his words carefully* I went to talk to Luca. He threw a punch, and things escalated from there.
Geddoe: Please tell me he didn't get off without a scrape...
Belcoot: *shakes his head* I managed to hit him in the stomach and arm and I disarmed him... but I think it's safe to say that I got off the worse of us two.
Geddoe: I gathered as much, from the mutterings amongst the infirmary staff. He hasn't been in, that I'm aware of. *squeezes Belcoot's shoulder gingerly* You stubborn, honorable man.
Belcoot: *chuckles softly* I supposed it's a bad trait... *but becomes serious again* I doubt Luca would check into the infirmary either way, though. He lost blood, but he's probably nursing the wounds himself. I wish I had the same option.
Geddoe: Better off that you didn't. I'd rather you swallowed your pride and came for help, than die for your honor. You're still alive, and that's no small feat.
Belcoot: *finally looks up at Geddoe, looking firm and resolute* Lyon didn't follow the trail, did she?
Geddoe: No. She and Roy both wanted to, but level heads prevailed. *withdraws his hand and sits back* It's a good thing I don't believe in vengeance, or I'd have gone down there myself.
Belcoot: I'm glad you didn't. Luca may have been injured, but that would've just made him more bloodthirsty, I'd imagine. *very slowly tries to move his injured arm, testing it*
Geddoe: *watches keenly* How is it? Besides sore.
Belcoot: I can probably fight with it -- it's a little stiff, but it's usable, no doubt. *stops flexing it, and just lets it drop back down to the blankets* Lyon's okay, isn't she?
Geddoe: As far as I know. I haven't seen her in a while. Then again... *tries not to chuckle at his own stubborn actions* ...I've been in here much of the day. She has other things to worry about, so I don't think she'll be tracking down your attacker anytime soon.
Belcoot: A man like you shouldn't waste time in here. *wry smile* It isn't too exciting in here, I'd bet. *can't deny that he's touched, though*
Geddoe: Not really, no. But it's quiet. Moreso than my quarters. I've had plenty of time to think. *tilts his head in a stiff shrug* It's not like I didn't take a break now and then. I sparred with Troy for a bit.
Belcoot: Troy? *has to think about who that is* Ah. A good fight, I trust?
Geddoe: Very. Something I needed. *looks back to Belcoot* I didn't mind sitting vigil, though. I wanted to assure myself that you were all right.
Belcoot: *not sure how to respond to that, so mostly looks overwhelmed* ... Th-thank you. *he looks away again* It looks like I won't be able to sparr with you anytime soon, however.
Geddoe: *chuckles gruffly* If that's what you're most worried about, then I have no doubts you'll be back up to speed quickly. I can spar with you later. Just rest, and heal.
Belcoot: Yes... resting. *he just looks agitated again* I still want to help out with whatever goes on, though.
Geddoe: I know. And I won't ask you to stay out of it just because of a little cut. *leans forward and places his hands on Belcoot's shoulders, trying to get him to lie back down and rest* I'll muddle through on my own until you're on your feet again.
Belcoot: Wh -- *does try to put up resistance, but isn't doing too well -- his sad attempts include holding onto Geddoe's arm pathetically with his good arm* -- ah! *ends up back on his back, still holding on*
Geddoe: Easy there! I'm not trying to hurt you. *holds Belcoot down until he's sure he's won the battle* It won't do you any good to get out of bed now. It's the middle of the night. The sooner you're healed, the sooner you can help.
Belcoot: -- I've been lying down all night! *still refuses to let go, a bit frustrated at being treated like a patient -- which he is, pretty much*
Geddoe: *clasps his hand over the one on his arm* Come, now. Are you really going to fight me for the right to get up? I know it's frustrating...I'm a very bad patient myself. I tend to go for a rune first.
Belcoot: ... ... ... *stays very quiet for a second, still not letting go* ... I only have a Falcon Rune. I'm not quite so sure how that would come in handy in a situation like this.
Geddoe: *looks startled, and breaks into a laugh despite the situation* A water rune. Or wind, if that's all that's at hand. It's a quick fix but no substitute for real healing.
Belcoot: *... realizes what he's talking about, and grins sheepishly* Ah, right. ... It'd be useful if I had either rune. *another pause* Let me up, just for a few seconds, please.
Geddoe: *relents, assisting him to do so* I'm sorry if I was forward. I only thought...I was being selfish, monopolizing your time speaking to you when you should be resting.
Belcoot: *quickly shakes his head* That isn't so -- I couldn't rest, even if I wanted to. Anyway... *he sighs and reaches with his good arm to his hair, yanking out the band holding his hair back*
Geddoe: Ah... *nods in understanding* Is there anything I can do for you, as long as you're awake?
Belcoot: *shakes his head again, nodding over to the fruit basket that Shoon left behind* I have everything I need in here, except for company. *laughs*
Geddoe: *smiles wryly* Then, if you'd like, I can stay with you for a while. I've got too much on my mind to want sleep, myself.
Belcoot: *nods* Though I'll object to you staying too long, mind you. I'm sure talking to Lyon and reassuring her would be good for somebody to do.
Geddoe: If I can find her. I will do that, at your request. Hopefully she's catching a nap herself, at this hour. *looks away toward the tall windows and the moonlight shining through* Just tell me when you've had enough of me. I'll leave you to rest.
Belcoot: *nods quietly, also glancing at the moonlight for a few seconds* ... Have you slept any?
Geddoe: ......... *turns back with a blank expression* Enough. I'm used to staying awake all night on watch, this is nothing.
Belcoot: *frowns, slightly* You aren't lying, are you? I'm fine now, so you should get some sleep before anything else happens.
Geddoe: No, I'm not lying. I'm a terrible liar. Ask anyone who knows me. *faint smile* I'll sleep when I need it. At the moment, I'm fine with distracting you for a while. When I'm tired, I'll leave you. I promise.
Belcoot: ... Only if it's a promise, I suppose. *still frowning* I don't want to keep anyone up -- especially when I'm just sitting here idly, complaining about a wound that I practically asked for.
Geddoe: You're not keeping me up. If I wasn't here, I'd be in my room, still sitting awake, but alone with my thoughts. *rests his hand on Belcoot's shoulder again, reassuringly* I haven't heard you complain once since you woke up.
Belcoot: Ah, the stream of cursing will come later, no doubt. *somewhat of a grin* Though, with you here, we'd best hope Roy doesn't run off on us.
Geddoe: Lyon has convinced him to accept a bodyguard, so I'm not being as strict about him staying in my room. *tries to stifle an eyeroll* I think we're both getting rather tired of it.
Belcoot: You mean, Nash? Don't they not get along? *looks very startled*
Geddoe: I was just as confused, but...it seems to be working. *sits back again and shrugs* At this rate, I'll take any small help I can get.
Belcoot: He seems trustworthy enough. I haven't exactly spoken to him, but if he hasn't turned Roy in by now, then... *nods, mostly to himself* Have you spoken to anyone else about going against Luca?
Geddoe: I spoke directly with Troy. He seems to have some understanding of past conflicts like this in the castle. I don't know him well, but he's a capable fighter and willing to stand up. I've gotten the sense that Kyle and Georg are with us, no questions asked. *smiles respectfully* Anyone who knows you will certainly want to be on board after this.
Belcoot: I can't say I know many people, though. I'm not exactly a social butterfly, being of my rank and occupation. *seems glad though, that Geddoe has taken the time to talk to others*
Geddoe: You underestimate yourself. I think there are quite a few who are going to want to make their own visits here to you, until you're on your feet. *sighs softly and takes off his gloves, settling in as if for a while* But you don't have to take my word for it.
Belcoot: Your word is comfort enough. *his gaze falls onto Geddoe's hands, and despite himself, he looks a bit curious* You have a True Rune, right?
Geddoe: Yes. *he shifts his right hand off his knee enough to let the moonlight shine on the back of it* True Lightning.
Belcoot: How is it, having such a thing? ... If you don't mind me asking, of course. *his gaze follows Geddoe's hand*
Geddoe: *thinks silently for a few moments before answering such a complicated question* When I was younger, I was afraid the ageless life would be a curse, but I've come to accept it. I think...the rune and I have an understanding. I don't hate it, but I don't feel such pride in it that I have to flaunt it. It's merely a part of me.
Belcoot: ... I can't say I understand at all. I doubt I ever would, but... I guess I know what you mean by those words. *closes his eyes* I'm glad you're not one of those sorts who are corrupted by power, though. After everything I've seen, it's quite refreshing.
Geddoe: *lowers his hand and looks thoughtfully at Belcoot* You've had worse experiences with True Runes?
Belcoot: The Sun Rune War was a battle concerning the Kingdom of Falena's runes. That was the war that I, and the other Falenans here, took part in.
Geddoe: I have only heard bits and pieces about it. Roy told me some from his point of view, in exchange for hearing of my exploits in the Fire Bringer wars. Kyle said the Sun Rune has some detrimental effects on its bearer?
Belcoot: The Queen would occasionally lose herself, suddenly becoming hostile and mad -- or so I've heard. I only glimpsed her a few times during the Sacred Games -- a gladiator like me would've never had the chance to speak to her, unless I had won. *seems a little discontent at the memory of the Sacred Games*
Geddoe: Sacred Games? This sounds like an interesting story. So that's how you know Shoon, I take it - you were both gladiators?
Belcoot: Yes. I competed for the Princess' hand. *realizes how strange this is now that he remembers Lym's age* I ultimately failed during those games, but I met many new people there, including Lady Sialeeds, Lyon and the Prince.
Geddoe: *looks interested, even humored* Gladiator games to win a princess's hand in marriage? I didn't know such a thing really happened, I've only heard it in tales. *grins a bit* You were a suitor? I see...
Belcoot: --ah! *actually looks a bit flustered* It wasn't like that -- I just -- *awkwardly goes quiet, and then speaks up again* I honestly never thought of the consequences of such a fight. I mostly wanted to change one law of Falena...
Geddoe: *listens intently, very curious now by his reaction* Oh...?
Belcoot: Slavery. I wanted to abolish slavery -- I know what that situation's like. The Queen Arshtat had already stopped brutalization of gladiators, but slavery... *he looks lost in thought for a moment*
Geddoe: *sobers considerably, hearing that word* And here I thought Harmonia was the only country still practicing slavery. That's...a very noble cause.
Belcoot: Noble or not, I wasn't able to follow through. *disappointed once again* I didn't win, due to a... mishap. ... None of the Falenans truly wanted me to win, either, being a foreigner and all.
Geddoe: I suppose, they wouldn't have wanted a foreigner marrying their princess. A pity. But then, you would have been doubly caught up in the civil war, if you had won.
Belcoot: Either way, things wouldn't and didn't turn out well for me, I suppose... though I much prefer this than the other alternative, I guess. I doubt I have what it takes to be a strong man such as King Ferid.
Geddoe: Modest, too? Heavens, Belcoot, have you no flaws? *teasing, dryly* I think you're selling yourself short again - though, I don't know how strong this Ferid is, so I can't make an accurate comparison.
Belcoot: *blinks, surprised at Geddoe's teasing -- he flusters faintly again, unsure how to deal with that sort of praise* Th-thank you. King Ferid is a good man, though -- he was a foreigner himself, and he won the hearts of many Falenans.
Geddoe: Oh, so it wouldn't have been unusual to have you in that position, had you won? Huh.*eyebrow twitch* You say, 'was.' What happened to him?
Belcoot: He... was killed. I'm not sure of the specifics, but I heard rumours that he was killed by the Queen's very own rune... how accurate that is, I don't know.
Geddoe: Oh. I see. *decides not to press* Well, no wonder Kyle was concerned that all True Runes might do the same as the Sun Rune. I had to assure him that it wasn't the case.
Belcoot: Your True Lightning Rune won't do the same, then? *sighs in relief* That's good -- I'd hate to think a man like you could lose his senses.
Geddoe: No, it won't... *gazes down at the rune on the back of his right hand, resting on his knee* ...the only danger from an elemental rune is if I lost control of it. I'd like to hope that after eighty years I've learned how to keep that from happening.
Belcoot: *a slight cringe on his features shows how worrying that sounds to him* Well... experience is always a good teacher, as they say. I have no doubts that you can handle the rune as such. *he looks a bit distasteful, though* I'm not such a fan of magic.
Geddoe: I don't consider it magic - I'm not a mage. True Runes are just...something altogether different. I'm not the young hothead I was when I decided to take it, I know more about it now and...I respect it. *closes his eye* When others would have rather sealed, given up, or destroyed theirs, I kept it close.
Belcoot: You speak of it as if it's another living, breathing creature. *finds it very hard to relate -- after all, he only has his Falcon rune, and he only relates that to Rolundier Haia*
Geddoe: True Runes are.... *studies his again, as if asking its permission to talk about it* They're said to have a will of their own, not quite a mind, but...they do carry the memories of past bearers. And sometimes I can hear that will, when it comes into conflict with my own. It happens less now that I wield it openly, instead of keeping it hidden.
Belcoot: I see... It sounds complicated. *looks even more worried for Geddoe now, eyeing the True Rune with a semblance of worry* I guess I can just count myself among the lucky ones for not having a True Rune.
Geddoe: It's a burden I don't wish on anyone. Eternal life isn't all it's cracked up to be. *idly rubs the back of his right hand* Don't look so worried. This is my life, I'm used to it.
Belcoot: It sounds like a hard one, though. I'm sorry for that. *looks away from the Rune, once again at his scarred arm*
Geddoe: Don't be. There's no need for anyone to feel sorry for me. I am what I am, and I make no excuses. *reaches over and places his hand on Belcoot's, since that's safer than touching his bandaged arm* I should let you rest. This time, I promise not to force you to lie down...though I hope you'll do it anyway. For your own sake.
Belcoot: *nods, looking at the older man and squeezing his hand reassuringly* I hope you get some rest as well, then. I'll do my best to recover in the next few days.
Geddoe: Are you going to drop out of the tournament, now? Even if you heal up enough to leave this prison by then...
Belcoot: *shakes his head firmly* I won't. I'll face Sir Kyle with what I have -- this won't be the first time I've fought with a handicap.
Geddoe: *raises an eyebrow* ...the Sacred Games?
Belcoot: Yes. I was poisoned by a girl before a fight. *looks very amused remembering this, surprisingly*
Geddoe: ....ouch. *shakes his head in disbelief* Well, then. If you handled that, you can handle Kyle in this state, I guess. At least the stakes are far less important than ending slavery and saving a country.
Belcoot: *laughs a nice, full, warm laugh this time, able to forget about his injuries for the moment* That's right. This time, it's only for fun and a piece of art, I suppose.
Geddoe: And the chance to face some stellar fighters. *pats Belcoot's hand once more before pushing himself to his feet, taking up his gloves* All right. It's time I stopped talking your ear off. Get some rest.
Belcoot: *nods* You get some rest too, Geddoe, and good luck for the tournament.
Geddoe: Likewise. I'm sure I'll drop by again before that... *smiles over his shoulder as he turns to leave* ...keep you updated.
Belcoot: *a chuckle* I appreciate it, Geddoe.
Geddoe: Good night, Belcoot. *decides not to wait around and make sure his friend obeys the order, and heads out of the infirmary to his quarters*
geddoe
