so i went down to new orleans, la (nola) to volunteer for The Green Project- an artsy group of people that salvage building materials from the many still blown-the-fuck-up neighborhoods that were devastated by hurricane katrina.
somewhere down I-65 in the commonwealth of kentucky, i freaked out. i turned around and put in a heading for home.
i was somewhat back together with ashley, was worried i wouldn't get to kiss her again due to her going out to vegas for the weekend-who knows, maybe she would run away with some sort of impersonator? i was broke, and shouldn't have been traveling any way-good cause or not. so broke in fact, my sis, who lives in another state, put $30 in my account to cover the rent fee for my weekend living in a "dark, cold" spare room in some doctor's house. oy vey. what a big fucking mistake.
i called my sister. she basically said i'd be an asshole not to go down and at least try.
so, i turned around and southbound on I-65 i went.
55 miles north of birmingham, al i had to shut down for the night. emotionally i was drained from the previous week's mess... and i was just fucking tired. this would make me miss my appointment to talk/start work at the Green Project, but fuck... i'm a trucker- unfortunately i've seen what happens to guys who keep pushing it, it ain't pretty m'kay.
wake up... stretch, pee, drive.
i get down to NOLA and somehow find the Green Project. it is in the bywater district of nola, kinda between the downtown area and the 9th ward/st.bernard line (easiest way to explain it). i find a place to park and call the lady in charge. unfortunately for me it was too late to start work, and am instructed to call later that day for further instructions.
m'kay.
i wander around the eastern side of new orleans. driving and walking through an area that had been basically wiped out by katrina. while walking/driving around i took some photographs of the neighborhood i was in and eventually came up to a retaining wall the led up to a road. on this retaining wall was graffiti, a memorial to some of the people who had died by katrina. the neighborhood i was in was the 9th ward. the lower 9th. i hadn't known until i had come across the wall.
i called the lady at the Green Project and set up a time to come in friday morning the 4th. as we were about to get off the phone she realized that they weren't working due to the holiday-makes sense, but unfortunately there had been no mention of this previously.
oy vey.
anyhoo.
well now i have to get ready to go get ash from work... to be continued.
