I've lost track of how many days we've been working on the house now, but here's the latest update.
Our house repairs are going... We have now had to demo about a quarter of the house. We found mold in the walls around one of the bathrooms because the pipes were all leaking. And it turns out we're sort of redoing the kitchen because we had to a) tear down some of the walls for mold, b) take down ugly tiles which punched some holes in the walls, c) put in a washer/dryer hookup, and d) put in a dishwasher hookup. Luckily we're going to be able to use all the same cabinets. We'll need new plumbing and countertops though. All of the wiring in the house has to be redone too. It's not grounded, and we need to upgrade the panel from 100 amps to 200 amps. So the wiring and plumbing are the two biggest issues. Oh, and there's a gas leak in the boiler pipes. The boiler is original to the house (58 years old) so we need to decide if we're going to fix it up or get a new one. We're using an electrician/plumber that Ben's parents used for their house, so we know he does good work. But it's going to run $10,000 to $12,000. Ben's parents are paying for it up front and we'll be paying them back.
Steve our electrician/plumber is hoping to get started on the house this Thursday or Friday so we have to get everything prepped for him before then (which means late nights at the house after work). We have to rearrange all the cabinets and install them where we want them so he knows exactly where to put in outlets and plumbing fixtures. We also have to clean up all the tools and materials and stuff that we have strewn about the house. And we're going to take off all the outlet covers (which are painted on to the wall) because that will save his guys time.
We're moving out of our apartment October 10th so we're hoping we can at least make the house livable by then.
