I've learned a few things.
Allow me to start by saying that I was less than inspired during my undergrad. My goal at that point was to graduate. That being said, my GPA is not impressive. I also did not put enough focus into the GRE. I thought my personal statement would be so compelling that I would be automatically accepted.
I met with the Director of Graduate Studies for the History Department. Apparently, I can tell them everything they want to hear in a personal statement, but I have to back it up with past performance. He told me my GRE score (450) was too low, and my GPA (3.1) wasn't high enough. With a GPA like mine, he said, I have to do better on the GRE. So I resolved to do everything I could to do better on my next GRE test.
Then I received more news. A couple months ago, Katie interviewed with Hyatt, the hotel company. She recently got a phone call from them, offering her a job as Assistant Manager ofFood and Beverage (read: alcohol) at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah, Ga, staring in August 2008. If she takes it, she'll be making significantly more money than I. Also, we'll be moving to Savannah.
There's a school about an hour from Savannah called Georgia Southern University, whose web page makes their History Department look decent, so I'm planning on applying after I raise my GRE score. I'm shooting for above 550.
As you can see, for the first time since I started working a year and some months ago, my life has taken a turn, and I'm optimistic.
