God's Boat
Three years ago, the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs began a program called the Japanese Literature Publishing Project (JLPP) to promote the dissemination of Japanese modern literature in four foreign languages, including English. Each year, they come up with a list of books, commission translations, and provide those translations to publishers. The books are all by prizewinning authors, the heavyweights of Japanese modern fiction. Much more high-brow than the stuff I usually do.
Anyway, I applied this year and they've asked me to submit a short sample translation of the book I listed as my first choice. Hooray! I'm in the running! If they like me--especially if they like me enough to use me again in future rounds--this could be my chance to start doing some more serious literary translation.
In other good news, V has promised to send me my next Tezuka assignment soon (and pay me for the last one). They also are doing a book of short stories by Suzuki Koji and offered me the opportunity to do one of the stories. And they promised to send me the 2008 spring line-up list as soon as it's ready so I can pick a book I want to do. Hooray!
Even if I can't do SD for a while, there are exciting career prospects on the horizon.
