Vegetable friends

It's getting warmer in Portland. Time to get some summer veggies in the ground.

I've been eating the spinach I planted last fall, just snipping leaves off whenever I need them for omlettes, etc. The onions are just right for green onions right now, and I tried harvesting the garlic. I'd never tried new garlic before but it has a really fantastic taste, garlicky but sweet, very tasty fresh out of the garden and raw.

Had my third prenatal exam yesterday. My midwife is so awesome. I'm really happy with our choice.

Had yoga today. The teacher is pregnant, too, and her due date is just 3 days earlier than mine. It's great to talk with someone who's experiencing a lot of the same things as I am.

Also, my cousin L is expecting a baby in August. His wife is Japanese, and we've been exchanging emails. She's debating whether to have the baby in a Japanese hospital or at the American hospital on the base where L works. Apparently, mothers can stay in the Japanese hospital for a whole week, the environment is very comfortable and the food is fantastic. But the father isn't allowed at the birth! Wild.

Post Script: That was a missunderstanding. Husbands are allowed at the birth in Japan, but L's wife was considering going to stay at her parent's house before and after the birth (this is a common tradition) and if so, L wouldn't be able to be at the birth since he works in Kanto and they are in Nagoya.
