My
Oh My Goddess comics arrived, more than 20 of them. So even though I haven't been translating anything in a while, now I can "work"--these are research materials for an upcoming project. Geordie has elected to also conduct research, on an unpaid basis. I have to agree, they're a pretty fun read. Rob, the editor I work with, also scored Geo a set of Nexus comics. Apparently, this is a momentous acquisition. I've also been shadowing NHK and reading the occassional article about North Korea to prep for my upcoming SD assignment--less than 2 weeks away! I bought a USA Lonely Planet--figured it'd be a good thing to have both for this trip and future ones--and a Hawaii one, too, since half of the programs end there so hopefully I'll be landing there more often.
I've begun to assemble my luggage--yes, I still have two weeks, but I have to plan for government offices, military bases and luaus, as well as both freezing and tropical climates. So it's best to start early so that I can think of things on time, and if I need to buy things, to allow time for delivery, etc. I ordered a really cute red suitcase with my birthday money from George and Margot--I'm looking forward to traveling with it. I've also been shopping for a pair of black leather boots, suitable for business, to wear with my suits. I figure that for winter trips, I need some footwear that can stand up to cold, rainy, and possibly snowy weather. Nordstroms was a zoo today. While I was trying on boots, somebody made off with MY boots, the ones I'd worn into the store! I found them put away in a display with other Ugg boots. I also bought some fresh note pads for interpreting. Learned that the guys at Office Depot don't understand if you ask for "stenographer's notebooks", but they do if you ask for "steno pads".
I plan to travel a fair bit over the next 6 months or so. I prefer not to languish in rainy grey Portland all winter. After the SD trip, I'll be back in Portland for the holidays, and then in January I may make a trip to Japan. January will be a good time for Wakana as she plans to be between jobs.
In February I'm thinking of popping down to Monterey to see Molly and Mackenzie and also attend the MIIS job fair. My prof has asked me to do a presentation on literary translation work--which would make the trip a tax write-off, right? And of course, networking at the job fair.
In March or April maybe I'll take another SD job. I want to get in as many SD jobs as I can before we start a family.
Which, by the way, we are thinking of starting to work on in 2007. So until then, I'll be taking as many jobs as I can.
In June I may travel to the UK to hang out with Danny and maybe get in some Euro travel. The JAT conference is in the UK this year, which makes that a business trip, too.
And in July, I think I might attend
Comicon 2007 in San Diego... depending on whether
