Summary: Kame and Ueda wait for the train.
“Are you excited?” Kame asked. His jacket was undone put he pulled it round him. The air still had a chill to it so early in the morning.
Excited didn’t really come close. Moving to Tokyo, the capital city, the heart of Japan, to pursue a career in music. It was a dream come true. Everything he had always wanted.
A small smile. A nod. A hum indicating the affirmative. Because surely it was wrong to express how happy you were to be leaving when something precious had to be left behind.
Kame stirred at his coffee before bringing it to his lips. A small droplet remained on his lower lip as he put the mug back down. Ueda wondered what it might taste like. Kame ran his tongue along his lip and sometimes he really had no idea of the effect he had on Ueda. Other times he knew perfectly well, took great pleasure in making the other man shiver.
“What about you? You have your first day on Monday, right?”
Kame smiled brightly. “Yeah, I’m nervous but at the same time, I can’t wait.” He beamed throughout the whole sentence. Proud of what he’d worked for and achieved. He’d always wanted to be a teacher and now he was really doing it. Ueda had no doubt he’d manage his first day with flying colours - with or without the nerves. Kame was just so damn good at what he did.
A small adjustment of legs and feet and Ueda accidently knocked Kame’s foot. He stilled instantly. Frozen. Worried. Suddenly overly self aware. Because they’d promised to keep it light and simple and Ueda wasn’t sure how much contact with Kame he could take before ‘simple’ went out the window.
Kame didn’t seem to notice anything had happened at all. This was hardly the first time they’d sat close enough to play footsie under the table. He’d slipped under this man's clothes many times before.
Kame drummed his fingers on the table then looked at Ueda with a grin before stopping, remembering he didn’t much like that habit of his. But his fingers stayed where they were. Right there on the table. Perfectly in reach. All he had to do was lift his arm from his side and that would be it. Reaching out. That’s all it would take. Just half a second and they’d be skin on skin, warmth on warmth.
Or maybe Kame’s hands were cold. Like this, he couldn’t tell.
“You’ll call me when you reach, right?” Kame’s foot nudged forwards, hitting against Ueda’s boot, and that was definitely on purpose.
Ueda smiled and nodded again. Only this time it was a fraction brighter. Kame was good at what he did. And he was taking this all in his stride. Relaxed. Cheery. Light and simple. Maybe it was easier for him, because he didn’t feel the guilt of being the one who was leaving. But Ueda didn’t think that was it, Kame was just genuinely happy for him. Optimistic and confident about their future. And it was infectious. Kame’s smile warming him up, easing his worries.
Kame’s fingers inched further onto his side of the table.
Ueda wasn’t sure at what point they’d say goodbye. Maybe when the train was finally here with a sliding door to part them. A subtle look at the station clock and Ueda decided they still had time.
They still had time for comfortable silences and simple looks. Half a second and it was skin on skin. Kame’s hand was warm. Ueda’s smile widened further. His leg stretched out a little, no longer conscious of being in Kame’s space. Wanting to be in Kame’s space.
Kame nudged his cup over to Ueda, who picked it up with his free hand and took a sip. Neither of them took their eyes off the other. A shared cup of coffee in one hand, Kame’s hand in the other, and this was light, and this was simple.
They still had time. Because this wasn’t goodbye. This wasn’t forever. And they’d see each other soon.
