TvTropes A long time before the events of the game, the demon Lucifer defied God and fell from grace. While all the other demons who had joined his rebellion were sent to Hell, Lucifer was sealed in the bloodline of a human family, the Zaberisks, and the archangel Michael was given the task of making sure that he never awakened.
Animamundi takes place in the kingdom of Hardland, in the year 1801. With the start of the industrial revolution, the king outlawed magic in order to promote the technological advancement of the country, banishing, imprisoning and even killing all those who openly practiced it. Despite this, Hardland found itself in the middle of a war against the nearby country of Eidellune and its army of undead soldiers. Fearing that the end of his mortal life would come soon, the king hired an alchemist named Bruno who promised to give him an elixir of life as the royal doctor.
Mikhail is the most recent reincarnation of Michael. Not much is known about his early life, other than he was born in Kamazene, where he met his friends Georik, a Zaberisk, and St. Germant. As time went by the three of them grew closer, soon Mikhail began to see Georik not only as his best friend but as his rival. Both Mikhail and Georik grew up to be great swordsmen, and at eighteen they became the youngest people to reach the finals of the annual fencing tournament with Georik defeating Mkhail by a very close margin. Once the tournament was over they met the then captain of the royal guard, Eliphus, who revealed that Georik's father was a famous doctor who had been murdered recently, and scolded Mikhail for regretting the the second place rather than enjoying the achievement.
Georik left Kamazene shortly after that to take care of his sister, Lilith, and Mikhail joined the guard with Eliphus as his inspiration. Though Eliiphus quited before he could manage a position, Mikhail eventually became the new captain.
Nine years later, Georik received an offer from Bruno to work as a doctor in the palace, and he returned to Kamazene. Unknown to everyone, Georik had made a deal with the demon Mephistopheles to save Lilith's life after she was attacked by an animal, causing her to be accused of witchcraft while he was away. Returning in time to see her execution, he set fire to the village and brought her still living head back to the city.
The rest of the game focuses on Georik's attempts to make a new body for Lilith through alchemy, at the same time working at the palace and paying the debt left by his father. Mikhail remains an important character, acting as a moral guide and being the first one to notice that there is something wrong with Georik through several incidents. Finally, he discovers Liltih's head and gives an ultimatum to Georik, promising to not turn him in if he got rid of Lilith and confessed his sins.
As the war intensifies, Mikhail is sent to battle, where he's captured by the enemy and tortured to the point that Michael awakens. Meanwhile back at Kamazene, Georik discovers that Bruno had been using him all along to gain access to Mephistopheles, resulting in Lucifer awakening as well. Having recovered his memories and healed his wounds, Michael summons an army of angels and goes to fight Lucifer, managing to defeat him but killing Georik in the process. In the ending "Something's lost" Mikhail, now aware of being the Archangel Michael, leaves Kamazene in order to search for the next reincarnation of Lucifer, giving a feather from his wings to St. Germant so he may be called in times of need.
✧ TIMELINE: Post ending - Something's lost
✧ PERSONALITY:
Mikhail isn't the quiet or reserved type-he's loud and passionate about everything he does, from his work to his friends, and he wears his emotions close to the surface. While he usually manages to restrain himself when the situation calls for it and most of the time he knows better than to act without thinking, Mikhail still gets into fights rather frequently because he tends to take insults personally and doesn't even attempt to dissimulate his opinion about people he dislikes. However, just as he can be short tempered and overprotective, Mikhail is very caring and enthusiastic, he's the first to recognize and reward effort the same as he's the first to call out bad behavior; the fact that his emotions often get the best of him is a sign of how much he cares.
Being a knight, Mikhail takes chivalry and duty very seriously. For him beliefs are worth dying for and there are few things he hates more than a coward or someone who has no honor; one of the biggest disappointments of his life was to find out that the ideals of knighthood and heroism had long been replaced by political interests ("Ultimately, the princess is not given to the best of bravest man, but the most politically convenient one"). His pride is also one of his worst defects, though, as he can be very obsessive about defeat and proving himself. On the other hand, his obsession with religion and righteousness turns out to be justified; the souls of sinners are sent to Hell and magic and alchemy are considered sins.
Although the relationship between Mikhail and Michael is never fully explained (or rather, the mechanics of reincarnation in Animamundi are left very vague) it can be assumed that they are the same person since they both refer to themselves as 'I' rather than 'us', they share memories and to a certain extend, a body; the changes in speech pattern and behavior can be seen as the result of momentarily embracing his angelic nature and his stronger connection to god. As Michael he's a lot more calm and in control of himself, most likely because he's had more time to work out his temperament issues, and has an even stronger notion of commitment; while Mikhail hesitates to denounce Georik's use of alchemy out love for a friend, Michael ultimately kills a possessed Georik because it was the only way to get rid of Lucifer. In this form he's far more willing to bend the rules to achieve his goals as well; in one of the endings he is shown to trick Mephistopheles in order to steal Georik's soul and take it to Heaven with him, kissing the demon afterwards.
✧ ABILITIES/POWERS:
Human abilities: Mikhail has a formal military training as captain of the royal guard, meaning he's an skilled swordsman, tactician, and can ride a horse.
Angelic abilities: He can summon lesser angels (and be summoned with a feather from his wings), heal wounds (broken bones, cuts, possibly others), fly, and he has an overall holy alignment. All this requires a
physical transformation, which is marked by slightly longer hair, wings, and an armor.

SAMPLES
✧ FIRST PERSON:
[ Mikhail, rather than immediately demand an explanation on the network, has been spending the last few hours bothering the residents for answers. Though he managed to understand most of what's going on, he's not happy about it. ]
Even if they say it's not forbidden magic or alchemy, I still feel like a young girl speaking to her diary! This is-- ugh.
[ He waves his hand. The only reason he's putting up with it is because he can sense the presence of darkness. ]
My name is Mikhail Ramphet, captain of the royal guard of Hardland. I know that my title matters little here, but I figured that announcing the presence of someone new would be the... polite thing to do. As a knight, it's also my duty to offer my help to those who may need it.
I only have one question. I would like a word with their royal majesties, but-
[ He frowns, then, a sigh. ]
I'm not familiar with the procedure of this place.
✧ THIRD PERSON:
Ever since he was a child, whenever he had a doubt about something, he went to the church and prayed. Fear, regret, worry, happiness, God always had time to listen to what he had to say regardless of the occasion. Of course, He never answered (or at least not until recently, and not unless he asked as Michael, which he did as little as possible because as far he as concerned the Lord shouldn't be bothered for trivial matters) but it gave him peace nonetheless. Even if this was not the same church, even if he was in a entirely different world, the principle was still the same and so he had been quietly kneeling down in front of a bench for the last couple of hours.
Today, he prayed for those he had left behind at Kamazene.
"Lord, I follow your command without hesitation. There is no angel in heaven more faithful that I am." He made the sign of the cross, putting his hands together against his forehead. "But I wish you had told me before. If I had known I... I wouldn't have promised anything to St.Germant. Please, Lord, keep him safe. He has a good soul and he deserves your grace."
Before leaving the city to search for the next reincarnation of Lucifer, he had given St. Germant a feather from his wings, promising to come to his aid if he was ever needed. It had been symbolic as much as it had been practical, a tie to the life he was leaving behind. Now that it was obvious that he wouldn't be able to go back, he felt the guilt of having lied to a friend; he had already lost someone darkness and he had wanted to do his best to protect what he had left.
"Don't let my words be untruthful. Be by his side, Lord."
