I DO NOT understand motorcyclists who tailgate. I just don't. I give a bike a lot of room just in case - I'd think they would do the same. Last year I had to slam on the brakes (driving my mother's Jeep, no less) and the bike who had been riding close enought to polish the rear bumper ended up in the oncoming lane as the only way to avoid ending up in the back seat. That was exciting for both him AND the oncoming car.
I don't get it - there are cheaper ways to commit suicide if you want to.
Tailgating on a bike is an invitation to disaster, just as you said and have experience. That being said I think I know what he was doing as prior to this he hadn't been that tight to cars ahead of him.
Where this happen was a gentle turn that leads to the 1 1/2 mile straight stretch of 55mph highway that runs in front of my place. I think he was getting ready to pass and closed the distance before doing so. IMHO however he did this way too soon and was way too close.
In any case the results will be memorable for him I'm sure.
