http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/hampshire/7832647.stm I came across this story because someone on Pete's friends list (not someone I'm associated with thankfully) had a comment which went something along the lines of 'lazy Christian twat'.
If you have a look at the article on the bbc website there is a quote as follows:
Hanne Stinson, chief executive of the British Humanist Association, said: "I have difficulty understanding why people with particular religious beliefs find the expression of a different sort of beliefs to be offensive. ..."
The point of this bus driver's actions has been entirely missed by both of these people, and all they have displayed in their statements is their own ignorance and intolerance.
He hasn't used it as an excuse to get off work - his managers instructed him to go home when there wasn't an alternative bus for him to drive.
His reaction is nothing to do with the fact that he found the expression of a different belief to be offensive. It was the fact that they were asking him to take an active role in delivering that message which caused a moral problem for him. It is one thing walking past a static advert, shaking one's head and thinking 'well I don't agree with that', but it is quite another when your boss comes up to you and says 'there's your new uniform' brandishing the exact same message.
Whether you have values which are shaped by a religious moral code or by a code of ethics, we must all remember what we value and be prepared to stand up to uphold those values, otherwise what are we?
