They want to turn the old cincinnati building into a hotel at the front and residential buildings at the back, 35% of which have to be council homes.
Not to be too pedantic, but they wouldn't be council homes per se. The Council doesn't actually build new council houses, because most council housing stock is being farmed out to housing associations and the like from what I recall.
the 35% is technically termed "affordable housing" (if that's the current politically correct term) and is typically used to describe low-cost starter homes, shared-ownership properties and either privately rented or owned by a registered social landlord (most of whom are technically the Housing Associations mentioned above). The idea is that they will be seamlessly integrated into the development so you shouldn't end up with all the rented one-bed flats in a big block in a particular place, they should be scattered through the development to create an inclusive and coherent "community" feel.
Still, hope the night went well - I assume we'll get a planning application soon enough so I'll keep my eyes open. The redevelopment is probably something of a foregone conclusion, but what gets built is now the key matter. We'd look at overlooking standards, distance separation guidelines, etc, so although the development will have an effect, it should hopefully not be too horrific. So no 15-storey blocks of flats outside your back garden (in theory), but you might find 3-4 storeys near to the houses round where you live (or nearer to it than the current building). Will offer my "not at all biased" and "allegedly professional" opinion when I see the plans.
