What do you want to do? I don't know, what do you want to do?

I had a dream last night about some black and tan cocker spaniel puppies, and today we've been down to Reading to see Pete's family and they have a little Jack Russell, and now I've started craving a dog ( Read more... )

Is it definitely a pedigree you have your heart set upon? If you definitely want a dog another option is to rehome via one of the various charities. Dogs are fantastic though!

The only reason I was looking at pedigree breeds is that I've got some experience with Cockers as a breed, and so I know what to expect from them in terms of behaviour and potential medical problems. I'm not adverse to a different kind of dog, but I would have to do a lot of homework first. I know the homes vet them and don't allow animals they believe to be dangerous to be adopted, however when you don't know an animal's background it's a bit difficult to judge their character IMO. It's all academic ATM anyway. :)

There is probably a cocker specialist rehoming organisation, most breeds seem to have one (apart from the really rare ones).

Thanks for that suggestion, I found this site: http://www.thecockerspanielclub.co.uk/rescue.htm

Just phoned the Birmingham and West Midlands representative who said that they keep a list of people offering homes and then when a dog is available they call them with a description and see if they're interested. Average age of a dog needing rehoming is about 5, and quite often by the time dogs are available people on the list have already found something else, as there's no guaranteed turnaround time obviously. She was really nice and didn't speak to me like I was a time waster or anything (I did say I was just phoning for information at the start, but some people can be a bit funny). Told her the situation with the other animals and things and said I'd call when circumstances were more suitable [and when Pete doesn't mind the idea]. ;P

I would agree in general, but it also depends how careful the breeder is with blood lines and avoiding sires and dams with known problems.
