Most of it wasn't on Earth...

Happy Gauda Prime Day! I got my tree up this evening while watching Blake in sync with other fans on Twitter. I thought I should post something here, and I suddenly thought of my Gauda Prime filks. I wrote several of these for the Freedom City list around the start of the century, usually around Christmas/New Year, and usually drawing on a song by a recently deceased musician/singer. Each focused on one character, though I don't think I ever did one for Dayna (or Orac or Slave, for that matter). Maybe I should put that right - no shortage of dead musicians to draw on this year. And maybe then I should post the filks to AO3, as I did my old B7 fic.

Anyway, I was originally going to post "Avon Calling", which I wrote in early 2003, after Joe Strummer of The Clash died. But as Gareth died this year, maybe it's more appropriate to use "Fairytale of the Liberator", which I seem to have done for the New Year of 2001, just after the death of Kirsty MacColl. I think it has the odd distinction of being the slashiest thing I ever wrote about Blake and Avon.

Fairytale of the Liberator
with thanks to the Pogues

BLAKE [rather drunk]:
It was Jenna's wake, here
In the space bar;
And Deva said to me,
How many more of them?
Then they all sang a song,
The Smuggler's Last Adieu,
And I turned my face away
And dreamed about you.

No, she won't die in vain,
We're building up again,
I've got a feeling
This year I will find you.
So come to Gauda:
I love you, Avon,
[he's getting very drunk and slurry now]
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true.

AVON [on Scorpio]: We outstrip any ship,
But you'd better be strong:
When you spend your life running,
You never sleep long.
When you first asked my help,
The London to seize,
You promised me
Freedom was waiting for me.

BLAKE [suddenly his old confident self again, as if he's heard Avon]:
You were handsome
And witty,
The beau of Space City,
Though you hankered for riches,
I treasured you more.
While Jenna was jibing,
And Vila imbibing,
We kissed on the flightdeck
Then danced through the sky.

BOTH: We laughed at danger as we vanished
To the teleport bay,
And the Liberator carried us away.

AVON: You're a dreamer,
A fool -
BLAKE: Whose dream's bigger, you ghoul?
You would die for a ghost,
But the living bleed most.

AVON: Who bled them,
You fucker?
You're killing those suckers!
Revolution your arse,
Your cause is a farce!

BOTH: We laughed at danger as we vanished
To the teleport bay,
And the Liberator carried us away.

BLAKE: We could have had something
AVON: Well so could anyone.
You took my freedom
From me when I first joined you.
BLAKE: We all lost it long ago,
But you didn't seem to know,
Can't make it all alone:
I've built my dreams around you.

BOTH: We laughed at danger as we vanished
To the teleport bay,
And the Liberator carried us away.
