It was a bright cold day in April, and Nottinghamshire were 98 for six

I saw my first live cricket* of the season this afternoon, after a morning's campaigning for the local elections. Nottinghamshire had chosen to bat in bright sunshine, though it was very cold, and were 68 for four by lunch. A fifth wicket fell as I arrived, and a sixth shortly afterwards, which left them on 98 for six, but the next two partnerships got them past 200 before the last few wickets fell. Lancashire ended the day on 25 for one in reply to 242.

Anderson bowls to Read. The flags are at half-mast for the chief executive's secretary, who died last week after an unexpected heart attack.

Wagner bowls to Broad - on his way to a devilish 6-66 on his debut for Lancashire.

At tea, they let us walk around the pitch.

This meant I got a closer look at the white marks and lines that the bowlers were using to measure out their run-ups.

And here's the Pavilion, at a slightly different angle from my usual one.

* Though it was my second visit to the ground in three days, after the Cardus Lunch on Friday.
