The case of the worst case scenario

Jul 04, 2014 03:33

This is a post I considered writing shortly after the last episode of Sherlock to date, viz His Last Vow, in January, but I didn't get round to it; I've come back to it now because of the announcement about the next series.

As I said at the time, I watched that last episode with a big happy smile on my face, right up to the final minute when That Thing Happened.

I am sincerely hoping that those friends who have persuaded me that That Thing was not what it seemed are right. This was a jolly nice explanation.

But I gave some time to considering the worst case scenario, and I'm going to write it down, so that whatever happens you can come and say "Well, it wasn't as bad as that." Unless, of course, it is that, in which case... maybe I'll give up on Sherlock.

Here is the horrible, horrible, slightly spoilerish thought.

In the closing stages, when they were trying to decide what to do about Sherlock committing murder, Mycroft insisted that he was "not given to outbursts of brotherly compassion. You know what happened to the other one." Since when, naturally, there has been much fannish speculation about The Other One.

In the worst case scenario, Moriarty would come back (ugh) and be revealed as The Other One - a long-lost Holmes brother.

See, I said it was a really horrible idea. Now I will go away, and revert to my own thoughts about The Other One, and where she's got to.

ETA, January 8, 2017: Thank you, writers, for following my preferred line of thought!
