I just discovered a short sound clip from the Donmar Julius Caesar
which I saw in January on Radio Four - it's Harriet Walter and Jenny Jules discussing and then performing the start of the quarrel scene. Apparently this was the first drama ever broadcast on British radio,
ninety years ago today, with Basil Gill and Robert Atkins as Brutus and Cassius. I didn't know this (though I think I had heard about the first full-length play, Twelfth Night, three months later); I'm thrilled that the BBC should have chosen one of my all-time favourite scenes to make history.
You can hear Harriet and Jenny
here; they chat for a couple of minutes, and then we get three minutes of the scene, ending rather abruptly halfway through - I'm not sure why they couldn't have given us the full thing. And you can see a few stills of the actors in the recording studio
here (with subtitles which suggest they did record the whole scene up to the reconciliation).
