Happy Solstice, everyone!
I'd also like to bid farewell to Bloomsday by remembering Alfred Hunter, who may have inspired the figure of Leopold Bloom by rescuing his casual acquaintance James Joyce from a fracas in Nighttown 108 years ago today, as represented in the Circe chapter of Ulysses. Or then again, according to some scholars, may not. The novel was set on June 16 rather than on the supposed date of this incident because June 16 was the first time Joyce went out with Nora Barnacle. Or possibly because it was a Thursday, which was a half-day holiday so gave the characters greater freedom. Anyway, to Alfred Hunter, a decent bloke by all reports who died in poverty.
