Rosie and the bedroom - updates

Sep 29, 2011 15:10

Rosie had a blood test on Tuesday - which was a bit strange, because the vet was a locum we hadn't met before and he wouldn't let me stay with her while he was taking the blood. And he tried to tell me I should be giving the thyroid pills whole, not crushed, so I said it was crushed or nothing because, having seen how much resistance these two cats put up to having anti-flea treatment on the backs of their necks, I am not attempting to put pills down their throats on my own.

Anyway, the crushed pills are evidently working, because one of the usual vets rang this morning to say that in four weeks Rosie's thyroid count has dropped from 196 to a very acceptable 23! She's also regained a bit of weight, and he says her kidneys and liver seemed to be good, which is reassuring, because Bella, her mother who lives next door, has responded well to the thyroid pills but turned out to have an underlying kidney problem.

So I think we'll continue with the pills for now; the vet suggested coming back in six months to see how they're doing. I haven't entirely ruled out the possibility of surgery for Rosie, as it's still more difficult feeding pills to her than to Tabitha, but I can't afford it at present with all the bills for the bedroom.

It's two months since the stained glass windows were installed, but since then I've been in a state of limbo waiting for something else to happen.

There has been an advance over the past week, in that the new shower has now been put in (with the new low-voltage extractor fan added today - apparently I was risking my life with the old fan). The shower controls are a bit puzzling, because it's pretty clear that the settings knob is supposed to provide top-shower-on-its-own (when downwards), top-shower-and-flexible-side-shower-together (when horizontal) and flexible-side-shower-on-its-own (when upwards). The first two work, but upwards currently means the side shower runs for about ten seconds after the top shower stops. I've spoken to a lady at the shop, who agrees that this is wrong, and there ought to be a setting that gives me side-shower-on-its-own. She says she'll talk to the manufacturers and try to work out if there's something we can do to fix it.

So that's two stages out of five mostly sorted. There's no advance on the decorating, because I've been asking my decorator to come round and give me a quote for five or six weeks and he hasn't had time yet. He was supposed to be coming last night and stood me up again. I don't want to find another decorator if I can help it, because I like Mike and I've found him reliable and cheap in the past (presumably why he's in such demand).

And the floor-sanders said they didn't want to do the floor until after the decorating, so I can't book them until I know when that's happening.

And Kath Fernie, who is doing the new wardrobes and chests of drawers, has been held up on starting those for various reasons, though there's no great hurry at present as there's no point bringing them in until the floor is done.

But I'm getting very bored with all this, because nearly everything that it usually in my bedroom is piled up in the spare bedroom, which is therefore unusable. The one nice result is that I'm living in a mostly uncluttered bedroom for the first time in ages, so I must really make an effort to find other storage for the clutter that won't fit into the new furniture and can't be thrown away.
