Finally got the results of Tabitha's test yesterday. They'd told me not to ring because they'd call me some time after four o'clock, but at 5.50 my nerve cracked and I rang the vet. He said the result wasn't available yet, but he'd chase it, and twenty minutes later he called back.
It's the thyroid. Apparently Tabitha's reading is off the scale, and until we get it under control her other organs (including the kidneys) will be damaged. We're to be issued with tablets, of which she has to have two a day (for life). Rather alarmed by this as I've no idea how I can get tablets down her - it's difficult enough applying flea drops to the back of her neck without help - but he says they can be crushed and mixed with her food, which would be OK, as I've got her to eat antibiotics that way. The alternative would be surgery to remove the thyroid gland. But the plan is to start her on the tablets, and then do more tests in three weeks to see how she's responding.
I've also made an appointment to take Rosie in tomorrow, because she's eaten very little today (as on Sunday). He thought it would be a big coincidence for both to be affected, but her behaviour isn't normal so I think we need to check things out. Can't quite work out if she's lost weight - I think a little, but she had so much more to lose than Tabitha - and she sleeps most of the day already, so that's not really a guide. But she does usually like her food.
Anyway, I think the news is moderately encouraging, as it seems Tabitha's condition can be treated, if only we can persuade her to take the tablets.
